i had a HP chip in my original ECU, but then sold it leaving me chipless, so i fitted a 19 16v ECU i had lying around.

Worked spot on, but after a while started having the cutting out problems. iv changed virtually every single thing that could be causing this, and still the same (although a fair bit better)

I noticed that 5turbo/willy from this forum has a 19 16v ECu instead of his willy one and was having the same problems. Hes since swapped to the correct ECU and cars fine.

So.... question is are all 16v ECUs gonna be the same, i.e ph1 and 2 ones? just so i know what to get.

No there are a few different types - some will work, other wont but wont harm your engine when tried.

When i had my one chipped by HP, nick told me there was two types (serial numbers) but i dont know much more than that. I found the following link which seems to list the different ECU serial/model numbers for the 16v. You might be able to match your current 19 ecu to the 16v ones you dont want etc:

get one from the same phase as yours and it should be the same.
