Very low mpg clio 172 mk1

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum, and hope you can help!

I've just bought a mk1 172 Clio sport, I have changed the cam belt, as the dephaser was knackered! was running really rough!!

I have also changed the Spark plugs because the engine light was on and was still running rough.

All this is done and is running well, apart from its is really drinking fuel! (70'ish mile to half a tank) the mpg is saying between 9-14 mpg.
I'm not driving it hard, just been pottering around town.
the engine light hasn't come on for a couple of days, but the engine stop light has come on a few time and was flickering a lot
when I was travelling down the motorway today,

any ideas?

Time to get it on a code reader but I'd say a broken lambda sensor is pretty likely.

Thought it might be, how can I get hold of a code reader? can I buy one or does it have to be done at a garage? does The Clio has two lambda sensors? if so any idea's as to which one it might be if I cant get a reader?

Phoned up Renault today, and they said they where both about £130 each! any cheaper places where I can get a couple cheeper without them being bad quality?

You can buy a code reader and it would be the first lambda if that is the issue.

Try switching the lambda's around and see if your mpg increases!

Ahh will try that! why does it have two sensors and what do they both do?
