VERY Scary, Read this...

  A Beautiful R32
I drove home today (as I'm feeling poorly and wanted some TLC  )... So feeling shitty, traffic is heavy and I 've got 40 miles of the M25 left to do...

I'm pootling along at 40mph in the outside lane (it was a 40 limit in the variable speed limit area), and I simply touched my brake. The car instantly LURCHED into a full on emergency stop... yep that's right, one little touch, emergency stop... So as you can imagine there was a skid mark on the road and a skid mark in my pants. The car had completely died. Luckily it started up and I managed to pull over to the hard shoulder.

I will freely admit that it left me terrified, I had no idea what happened and why the car could behave in that way. Called AA Renault Assistance and they managed to get someone out to me after about two hours. In those tho hours I recieved loads of abuse from passing motorists, I'm not sure why, and only one couple stopped in their little blue beetle to check I was ok...

The AA man said that he thinks my brakes were probably 'binding'... has anything like this happened to anyone else here??

Very scary, what would have happened if I was doing 70 and someone was close behind me??

  No more clio's for me!
Very scary matey. Hope you get it sorted, this could have been very nasty indeed, especially on the M25 when everyone sits on ya back bumper.

Sounds like the famous temp. sensor. Been there and the engine can suffer a total shutout. Good luck. I'll almost guarante the the issuue.

Get the temp. sender sorted. No way the brakes go into total shutdown anyway. I was stranded on the A10 north, guess what, no one helps.

Nearly a total no brainer

temp gauge seemed fine though... I did just literaly touch the brake and the car srceeched to a halt... very, very scary...

I can take the people not helping in this day and age... don't understand why grown adults have to shout "serves you right you f**king c**t" when I've done nothing wrong and they don't know me.

Tell me about it Dave, outside lane of a main arterial road (A10), you'd think it was easy to push a 1090KG car by yourself across two lanes with everyone fighting to get past/cutting in. Trouble is, for what??? in 200 yds the traffic is stationary for 1/2 mile. No one can even look that far ahead, Where do these numpties think they are going.

Best bit was seeing these selfish/going nowhere numpties after the AA had to block the whole road to rescue my poorly car. It could have been sorted within 2 mins. if anyone had looked further that their bonnet length. "SAD SAD", where does everyone think they are going anyway~?????

Sorry a 11000 mile 182 with now four temp sensors, hence the comment.

So Blaze matey, what exactly was happening to your car then? Was it cutting out all the time? Any error codes or fault lights? Gonna try and take it to Renault tomoz to see what they say... and you know what they're like, the more ammo the better. ;)

It was just so unexpected bud, one sec you're happily plodding along, next thing you're parked in the fast lane with traffic zooming down on you... I'm glad the car restarted though and didn't just die. That would have been seriously scary....

  ST on the way...
It's typical of folk these days, too obsessed with themselves to help anyone.

I remember my old R5 without abs, if you locked the wheels and forgot the clutch at all, dead engine and no servo!! :S

Thank god that hasn't happened to me here,i think i'd be in a morgue as people just sit 2'' off your bumper. Sad fact is that people don't want to help other people out, very few good eggs left out there. Hope you get it sorted soon mate and received extra special TLC...

Took it out to Renault today, and they said they wouldn't be able to look at it for 2 weeks

So sod that...

Went for an extended test drive with my old man and we did lots of harsh braking and I tried to recreate the speed and what I did. The car seemed completely fine. I'm hoping it's just a simple one off event, maybe it was just the heat and the frequent 'in traffic' light braking, maybe the temp sensor but it started again and maybe I caught the accelerator when I broke and it stalled the engine, though at 40 that shouldn't happen. Just wish I knew what bloody happened!! Weird though, feel a bit more confident now I've taken it out for a drive.

One point I wanted to ask about was the colour of the brake fluid, should it be clear and does it matter if it's black??

  Shhh
Have to remember the fluid resevoir is behind the engine so its shadowed, best to shine a torch in there to show the true colour. New fluid is a clear yellow ishy, but after time it can go a funny colour, maybe brownishy if its really old.

I think its just the shadow, as to the fault. If it drives like it should do now, renault wont be able to fix the damn thing. Id just take it up and down the dual carriageway with some harsh braking to clean the pads up, and check its all working as advertised.

  80MPG BEEZA
take it out on the night time and give the brakes a serious hammering then spray some brake cleaner onto the discs and pads it may have just binded if it doesnt seem to be doing it now

Thanks guys, it "seems" to be ok now... just hope it doesn't spit me backwards through a hedge...

I'll have a closer look at the brake fluid tonight when I'm back from work...
