ah right, although tbh I just drop the whole frame to do the mk 1 anyway, leave everything up top apart from 3x bolts to box from top box mount then undo 10 bolts or so for frame/side bars/4th mount/column and ball joint pinch and drop the lot so it hangs off the downpipe, box drops straight out then and no power steering means no hassle! :)

I just loosen the drivers side of the frame and then lower down the pass side.

Done a couple out the top but that was on the old shell where I didnt care about the paint in the bay.

out the top is a pain, frame off and bottom exit is the way, hour or so's job then if it goes smoothly, which these days it always does with the box being out so often! :)

You two make it sound easy!!

I need to attempt an engine and gearbox swap on a Mk1 with non-removable front crossmember thingy (technical term lol) and I fear it is going to be difficult...

I need to get hold of a guide! lol

First thing to do is make the cross member removable really TBH mate, will be a right pain otherwise.

Trivial once you have done that, just lob it in the hole like so:

Hmm... I'd rather not chop it up but if it comes to it...

If I don't chop it up, I'm guessing splitting the box off the engine while it's all still in there will be a good idea, rather than attempting to take it all out as one?

I've never done it before but should be doing it at a proper garage with a friend's dad over a weekend, but I bet I can't get it done in a day like I want to... lol

It just looks like hard work whether you take everything out the top or faff with doing the subframe route!! :(

Ive only ever had the valver/williams shell so never tried with the slam panel in place.

you could always take the subframe right off and just lift the whole lot in from the bottom like doing a calibra etc.

short while ago i changed a box with the engine installed and dropping the subframe. imo it's easier to just take the whole lot out!
a few connectors, cables, water, brake calipers, shifter rod!!!!!(get's forgotten a lot) and you'll be able to lower the lot

Everything on a pallet then lower the shell onto it using ramps? lol

Its not as easy as it sounds TBH

Its a pain cause unlike a lot of cars the steering rack has to come down as its on the subframe.
