As far as high street, Next, Daily Mail type taste is concerned, the 480 series are gross. Really minging. Cheese wedge redefined with a bit of extra grossness and then some more, please.

For die hard fans like me, they represent everything that is really quite nuts about Volvo. Quietly mega fast, ok and no more handling, safe and proper left-field-of-avantgarde styling. Nothing quite like it. A cheap Bristol, as it were.

For well under £1000 you can pick up a mint 1.7 turbo 480 with leather. To my eyes thats a bargain - and the fact its likely to have been owned by Ethel who had it serviced every 2000 of the 10,000 miles it has on the clock can only be a bonus.

The 1.7 turbo may "only" be as quick as somewhere between a 16v and an RSi, but you dont buy them for that...

Go find something else as nuts as this!:

The amount of torque steer dealt out by my mums old 2.0 480 was unreal! Even on a motorway, just playing with the accelerator made it change lanes! Crazy! :p

It was a strangely quick car too, but nobody wanted to admit it as we all thought it looked so damn ugly! But youre on to something there Ben, it was super-low mileage, reliable, hardy mega-value and pretty aerodynamic too, just ugly and quirky in the bargain... ;)

I dont know whether to congratulate you, or commiserate you clioless !
