Welded on brake dust...

During the big cleaning session today, I came across some brake dust that would just NOT come off the wheels. It was like black freckles in between each spoke, loads of like 1mm dots with the odd bigger patch. Just would not budge. Tried soaking it in Autoglym Clean Wheels and everything, still nothing. Didn't try scrubbing with anything more abrasive than a sponge.

Any recommendations for a product or technique that will budge this real stubborn stuff?

Sounds like it's bonded to the wheels . I doubt any wheel cleaner will shift it tbh .

Halfords sell a wheel cleaning brush , it's a bit like those pan scourers but less harsh . They are about 6 quid . Pretty much shifts anything . Or you could try using clay .

Forget the expensive stuff.

Renault Wheels cleaner removes even PF97 dust with a few minutes left to it and a gentle scrub with a brush.

Well I do still have yesterdays clay bar so I'll give that a whirl - I've never seen Renault wheels cleaner? I get that from a dealer?

The above will dull the wheel finish nicely! May get it if off though but have my doubts if AG Cleans Wheels did not touch it.

is that so?

More of a question, as I'm fairly useless at detailing. :clown:
used it myself last night.

when I use it, I don't leave it to soak for ages and I wash it off afterwards. It's strong stuff i no. Don't use it often, but I think it could be good for this.

I've got this s**t all over my front wheels. Its getting progressively worse too. The brush I have seems to do sod all, can get more off rubbing it with my finger!

Does this 'Renault Wheels cleaner' recommended by Yoz get the Rich seal of approval? If so I'll give it a go :) Get it from a dealership I assume?

It is very strong and acid based first time I used it on my old 309 GTi on Graphite wheels that had been polished top a high gloss after one use the finish was flat as hell, they went from being deep graphite to a wishy washy grey.

It is a last resort product that I would use if I really had to, but from past experiences if an acid based product such as the AG Clean Wheels is failing so will the Wonder Wheels.

One to use once a a really deep clean and then polish and seal you wheels and leave on the shelf.

Not one I would use as I don't use acid based wheel cleaners (which I am only guessing it will be) unless I really need to. If non acid based cleaners such as Megs APC or AG Engine and Machine Cleaner don't work for me, I will then use some clay and only reach to the Autoglym Acid based wheel cleaner as a really last resort.

Hmmm, I'll have a shot with the clay, get the proper brush out that's a bit harsher and pray a bit :)

I've been getting those baked-on speckles ever since I changed my pads to Mintex extreme. I tried wonder wheels last weekend, didnt work at all, although I could scrape the speckles off with my fingernail? It will take me forever with my finger though so I'm gonna look for a slightly harsher wheel brush.

I would use clay, it will shear it of like your nail does, but quicker, easier and kinder on your nails lol

Yep clay seems to do the job 99% of the time for me, even on terrible looking alloys.

But I have done some cars which have lost their protection (probably from using acid wheel cleaners) and the brake dust seems to have properly bonded with the metal of the alloy itself, which I found near impossible to remove with anything.

Moral of the story: don't use acid wheel cleaners often or at all, and keep your alloys well sealed with a suitable product.
