Not the end to the day I’d hoped for, hit by a motorcyclist that was overtaking at speed in a 30 as I turned right…

Motorcyclist had a broken leg and his bikes worse than the cat but luckily for him he’s going to be okay which I’m very relieved about as my heart sank at first just horrible.

I’m Properly shaken up is was my daughter.

trying to sort recovery as I don’t really want it leave it but it’s safe to say it’s going to need some TLC.

Behind, I did mirror checks and a shoulder check but he just wasn’t there, drivers behind said he was shifting and had overtaken 3 other cars…

Thanks, it’s the first real dangerous thing that’s she’s been directly involved in outside of controlled risks we let her take as part of growing up, she’s seems okay but we’ll talk about it in the next couple of days and make sure she’s okay and see if she has any questions.

Glad you and your daughter were unscathed and it looks like the biker was lucky to just land a broken leg.

Last November we (wife, 2 kids and I) had a drunk woman drive at us on a duel carriageway, I managed to avoid her but the motorbike behind me had no where to go. My 6yr old saw it all including the full aftermath as we tended to the driver and helped the Police etc.
She had a lot of questions in the weeks that followed, and we talked about it daily, why, how and who was to blame etc.
Luckily kids are pretty resilient and she barely mentioned it a few months later.

Thanks, thats good to know, my daughter is pretty much 7 and i am sure she will have lots of questions (don't they always?!?) but we try and be really open with her so we'll do what you did which sounds like sage advice.

I think you have to be for the sake of their own development - and not wrap them up in cotton-wool away from the world and it's 'bad parts'.

I've no kids myself, but their uptake and adaptability on new experiences is pretty amazing. I would have thought both listening to kids and being supportive would be two of the biggest benefits a parent could offer to their kids?

You are totally right, we don't shield her much she experienced life and death with her first pets, guinea pigs, as one got very ill and had to be put to sleep but we had the opportunity to bring him home afterwards and she got to see him and we talked about what it means, i think its very easy to try to avoid / protect kids and that to me makes it worse later down the line, if an opportunity to teach her about something new comes up then we talk about it, such as the war in Ukraine, she mentioned it we talk about it, the same with this we have been talking about it and she is genuinely concerned about the biker even though she understands it was his fault as she understands making a mistake is not a reason to dislike a person or hope injury / pain on them. She's very mature with it all to be honest, proud of her.

Oddly the one thing that made me more sensible was learning to ride, the vulnerability to me was acute.

So not quite sure what to do here, clearly the car is not economical to repair from the insurers perspective and my insurance have eluded to as much. As such they are arranging for it to be collected by CoPart for "valuation" which "has to be done on site". I want to keep the car and even if its written off as i've put a lot into it and I doubt i'll get all of that back (belts exhaust etc). Does anyone have any experience with CoPart and a valuation / getting the car back etc?

Im going to take loads of photos as well and might keep some of the parts like arch liners and grill that are easy to hide away and say they were left at the crash site, possibly even the bumper.

Lots of good info here. Of note is to tell the insurance company that you want to keep the car or buy it back as soon as possible, make sure they know that before you let anyone take it from you!

Great thanks! As it my insurance company trying to take it I will call them and tell them i don't want them to take it and they can get a valuation from my drive and if it needs to be disposed I will cross that bridge at the time.

Fight and dig your heels in mate, it saves you a headache and it saves them recovery and processing fees
