Went out earlier on - minus the engine covers

I've heard of a few of the vee owners take theirs out for a blast minus the engine covers, so as I had a few things to check in there, I thought i'd do it too.

I've read a lot of people saying that 'they sound mint' without the engine covers on.
Hmmm, round town at 30 mph the drone from the engine is utterly boring. Taking the car to 4000 rpm sounded like it was going at about 14,000 rpm, but then the engine was uncovered & about a foot from my ears

On an A road while opening it up, it sounded mental, the induction suck noise is great (it's standard too) I have an green element to fit & have been told that sound even better with one of those fitted:cool: (no gains, but a nice noise)

It's quite good to hear all of the clicks & noises the engine makes, changing gear sounded pretty rubbish though (very metally)

I was expecting it to be really hot in the car too, when I was driving it it wasn't noticeably hot at all, but when I got out of it & returned a bit later, omg !! It was like a tropical heatwave in there !

To sum up, driving at a constant speed & rpm is monotonous, put opening it up is great :approve:

when i read the title i thought this was gonna be a story about some guy removing his engine cover from his 172 like they did with the cup and noticeing a performance gain due to less weight lol

what do you mean fred? a vee can burn??! :rasp:

did you ever speak to ray about the bulkhead by the way? tim's car is finally finished, and the bulk looks very nice indeed!

I took mine off and it was stupid loud, could have really done with ear defenders, couldnt drive like for more than a couple of minutes. Not sure if having the viper inductions kit and Quicksilver OMG zaust added to the loudness but it was pretty much unbearable imo

no, a different tim. my flatmate, he has the vee in performance tuner this month. last time i saw trw1 tim's car it was still a bare shell!
but i would definately get that bulkhead!!

Not a good plan!!! Sounds like it's goin to explode, not to mention the heat inside the cabin! 35+ degree's easy!

I did it again at the weekend after i changed the oil! With one cover on it sound decent tho.

Ive had my engine cover off and just took it down the street and was really loud, I have BMC and Quicksilver exhaust but didnt go too far as loads of dirt started being flicked up into the car lol.

Wont be doing it again but has to bo done once to know what its like lol

Yeah the PK6 gives a dodgy gearchange in the 1.9 Lagunas aswell  hahah

Change the gear oil might help if its that bad.

Gearbox oil & engine oil was changed last week, as was quite a lot of other parts too.

The noise wasn't overly bad, just more than it would have been if I was a good boy & left the covers on;)

  Golf R soon...
Nice one dude! I bet dust was flying everywhere!

Shame you can't do that with an R32! lol! I suppose you could bet it wouldn't be the same!

Ah right fair enough aslong as it hasn't got worse - with the engine cover on as normal.
