What car did you have B4 your 172

Well Ive been slating the 172 recently as it just doesnt live up to all the hype (compared to my 106 GTI) yeah its a good car with bags of power, but it just isnt in the league of the 106GTI/Saxo VTS in the fun factor department IMHO....

So what have all you other 172 owners had (and I mean for a while) and properly appreciated before getting your 172.

  Corsa 1.3 CDTI

## Flame Suit on ##

I had a Mk 5 Escort GTi - A complete sacka (sacka sh1t that is) but very very reliable and never broke down. A bit of a grey suit grey tie grey socks performance eg very boring. Couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding.

A Mk2 8v Golf GTi big bumper which i wish Id kept, and a beautiful Alfa Romeo GTV6 that I have recently sold; an automotive light has just gone out in my life, sob sob...

Well i still have a sunny GTI-R, but before that it was a clio 16v. Wonder where it is now as i did a nice head job on it and it used to fly.

  ICE'dberg MK2 172

Last car was a 91 Fiesta XR2i 8v. Had it 7 years and sold it with 33K on the clock and it was mint.....gave it away for £2200.

........first car was a Hillman Imp.....aaaaaagggghhhhh. Alloy head and block and neaded rebuilding every 6months.

Now that was a sack of sh*t...does that make you feel better Chavyboy;)

  Abarth 595 Trufeo

I had a 2000 Clio RSi 1.6 16v for 10 days

before I took it back to the dealer - I found it just wasnt right for me.

Before that I had a Suzuki Baleno 1.6 GS Sport.

Great little car and very quick for a 1.6

couldnt bear to part with it so gave it to my Dad.

Few yepp cheers Chris.

...306 s16, cracking motor if a little slow compared to the new arrival....id agree with bigbash to an extent, not driven 106 but 306 seemed more user friendly on the back roads, i guess that may have been down to the relative lack of grunt, not sure. handling of pug i would say was better but the clio is by no means a bad car and that midrange overtaking ability is awesome.

  2005 Audi A3 3.2 Quattro

Had a mk1 VW Golf 1800 SPORT, then an Opel Corsa 1.6iS, and now Ive got a Clio 1.4 16V...who knows, maybe next time Ill go for the 172...just so damn expensive

I had a 306 DTurbo, many a Vectra SRI did I piss off in that. Brilliant looking across when you pass to see a confused look on a guy as he looks down and reads diesel.

I agree, the 172 doesnt inpsire confidence. But it is an extemely capable car. The 106 is almost unique, only other car which can be thrown around as much is the Noble M12. Mind the 106 diesels handling is crap.

I had a red Ford Mustang 4.6 V8 whilst working out in Miami for a year before I came back to the UK and picked up my shiny new 172 withing 4 hours of landing!!

Soooo much torque its untrue - but the handling was a nightmare, and it was practically undriveable in the wet, it just fishtailed for fun.

I had a 3.8 V6 convertible Mustang for a month too, that looked really smart as the hood was always down as it hardly ever rains, but the handling on that was even worse than the hardtop

When I was giving it some I used to get about 7 or 8 MPG!!!

Yep had the polo for 4 months the engine melted it was like real mess in there.

The VTS I had 3 in 10 months all fell to pieces and niether of them idled steadily. The director of Citroen uK even came down in a VTS to lend me ( and have a chat ) he reckoned mine was better than the one he was lending me.

Apart from the scarey ( but fun ) handling in the 172. It was by far my greatest hatch.

My Lexus IS 200 is really scary in sport mode the tail seems to shift sideways on acceleration but comfy the rest of the time.

Oh and the family Alhambra. Well it gets there eventually poor thing.

I dont recall his name it was a few cars ago now. but Ill see if I still have his invite letter anywhere amoung my old my car stuff.

I do remember he was almost an hour late and I was treated with dirty looks from the staff knowing why I was waiting in reception.

Funny you should mention the fact that I am very important...

We didnt get off to a great start. He began the chat with " You are very important person to our company" I greeted him with " I manged to be on time so I dont feel so important".

No dont have the letter all I have left of the VTS is this
