What Do I Get To Replace The 182?

  BMW 320d SE
My 182 is over 3 years old and I feel it might be time for a change. I've looked at other cars, but nothing really stands out.
So far I've looked at:
Alfa Romeo 147 GTA 3.2 V6 - gorgeous, but too expensive and running costs too high
Subaru Impreza - quick, but too expensive and poorly spec'd
Seat Ibiza Cupra TDi - right price, good mpg, but poorly spec'd
Renaultsport Megane R26 - nice, but too expensive

I don't know what to get really. Anyone got any ideas? I'm not really sure what I want, but I'd like a car with most of the gadgets and gizmos that the 182 has, but something a bit newer and at least as quick.

Price? If it was me i'd go for something completely different, RWD or a muscle car.

Ideally somewhere in the region of £12-13k. I'd love a Monaro VXR 500, but that's not gonna happen!
I forgot to say, I like the Elise or the VX220, but they seem a touch too expensive for a recent model (and there's nowhere to put the mountain bike). ;)

You just ruled out all your options one way or another.

Keep the 182 until you can afford to run / buy something better.

LOL! Yeah you're probably right.
I wouldn't get the Meggy 225, as I'd just be wanting the R26 all the time.
The Alfa was stunning, but they want £17k for an 05 plater.

Depends which Impreza you mean for poorly spec'd. They're a bit better spec'd than an Elise or VX220 thats for sure! ;)

Brand new R26 is less than that.

I love the GTA, and was considering one, but would constantly be worried about it breaking, and would cost a lot to run, and the understeer would probably kill me in the end.

So I went for the more "sensible" choice of a new car for the same sort of dosh.

Personally, I wouldn't consider a diesel (no offence to those with Derv) I know some people love the instant torque, I had a GTTDi golf chipped to 140bhp (not a lot but pulled well). I just found the drive a bit boring, theres no real noise to go with the rush! I drive a 330D sometimes (company car) it would pull a house down but I prefer a decent soundtrack and the fun of keeping them on the band! Got a VTR now, made of the same tin my beans come in, but a heap of fun to drive!

Mmm... I'd forgotten about BMWs. I like the 330 in the first link Ian posted. Right price too. I appreciate what people are saying about diesels, but the fuel economy means I can't rule them out.

330i or 330D?

Avg. MPG on the company one 330D is usually around the high 30's low 40's.
Which for a 205bhp and 300+ torque isn't bad!! It pulls like a train, and with ESP etc. off will step out all day long :)
I know I would never go back to derv tho!

If your thinking of stepping up into an EVO or Impreza be very aware of the running costs.

I recenltly learnt the hard way. Have (tho its sold) a Impreza Spec-c JDM (2003) and whilst i did my research, and could run a 182 with out problems, to step up is far more than you expect!

After just selling it, i lost 2k on the price, plus in the 2 months of ownership i managed to spend £700 on petrol, and that was doing nothing more than i did in my clio.

Not to mention the £400 a year tax etc.

Whilst its easy to get blinkered by all these big power cars, try and look at the whole picture!

all i can now say is i cant wait to get my hands on the 172 i just bought! :D
