what else can i have done to the engine while its in bits

ive been quoted £200 off a mech friend of mine to have a new head gasket, head skimmed (i think it was that) new fan belt & new timing belt all fitted + oil change & wanter/anti freeze done.
does that sound ok?

i also enqured as to wether a new engine would be better/cheaper and he asked has mine done over 100K, i said no (its done about 88K) and he said no it'll be fine. any thoughts?

and as per the title, is the anything else i could have done to it while its in a stripped down state to get a bit "bang" for my buck ;)
i've heard reboring (spelling?) mentioned before, but im not sure what it is. if someone could explain and give any recomendations that'd be great :)

previous post has got more details in it

Reboring is where they clean the ctlinder bores iirc if you ahve heavy scourering.

Change the water pump.

Take it the whoel engine isn't coming out, just the head coming, off, crank shaft oil seals if the whole thing is coming out.

You can pick up 2nd hand engine esp 1.4's dirt cheap, but i would overhaul any 2nd hand engine i got and get it in decent condition, so will prolly cost you more to do that routeeven if you do do the work yourself

You could drop an RSi engine (1.8 8v ) in the car for about £200 - that would the easiest option. Pointless messin with the 1.4 E7J lump - not much you can do with them

lunner - thanks for the reply, but why the water pump?!

matt - i was thinking about maybe sticking a 1.8 valver lump in to it, but then someone pointed out about the ecu, gears, breaks etc
also, do u work with j4nned over in accy?

generaly, what do people think of the price quoted?

I am J3ned :) - a 1.8 16v lump with box ECU and loom will set you back about £500 for a good one were as the 1.8 8v is a lot more common and a hell of a lot cheaper. Power difference will be greatly improved compared to your 1.4 and from an insurance point of view looking at a 1.8 8v lump will be no more different from looking at a 1.4 lump - if you catch my drift ;)

I thought re-boring was making the phyisical size of the bore bigger in order to increase the capacity of the engine, But you would also need to use bigger pistons and maybe mess around with the stroke length?

I think Re-Honing is where the clean the cylinders/liners by removing any scoring or rust/crap if the engine has been laid up or apart for a while.

Please correct if im wrong!

if you were going to that, you might as well just fix the original engine! a proper overhaul costs more than £200.

Waste of money fixing a 1.2/1.4 IMO...as Lunner said you get them dirt cheap (sub 50quid) and they can sit for a VERY long time without needing overhaul work.
