What Filter? Edde - this must B 1 4 U

  X-172 Cup
Sorry if there's another thread on this - I checked two pages back & couldn't find nish...so anyway Air Filters, I have never modded any of my cars or bikes before but I'm getting tempted to treat Nichole 'cos I love her and if I can help her breathe more freely then everyone is a winner...

Is it true that removing the OE filter box thingy is considered very bad?

If so is there a benefit to changing the probably very cheap and nasty Renault filter element to a sexy one?

If so which one & what are the benefits? - I don't want to spend £50 on a sexy filter if I don't get @ least an extra 25 BHP - Just kidding, as an ex engineer I'm realistic about the benefits of improved air induction but if there aren't any then I'm not spending...

ITG?/K&N?/Cotton Wool?/Wire Wool?/Shredded Wheat?

Over to you...Edde - Help!

No reason not to remove stock one its the Williams/1.8 16V who have better standard ones than aftermarket in 99% of cases.
The Viper is supposed to be the best but its very pricy plus you'll want a cold air feed.
Personally if you want power get the manifold worked By BenR etc the gains are better.
If you want sound any drop in any aftermarket filter and a decat/exhaust are a better way IMO.
The cat and manifold are possible the best Hp for £ gains you cna do as the 172 stock cat is quite restrictive and one of the ways the 182 made more power was by going to a bigger freer flowing cat.

Providing I don't lose any performance, these filters seem pretty good - or are they only worth fitting with other mods?
£140 for BenR modifiication similar to what Nick Hill does as well. It gave something like 12hp on a car with a IK and an exhuat. On a stock car expect between 2 and 10hp dependsing how good the stock one you have as they can vary massively.
Cheap price that £10 then again a new one not much more and least you know how blocked up a new one is you'd have to clean this one which is time and effort.
