What is this sensor ? Help please

  Trophy #267
I was just checking under my bonnet on Sat when I saw that a sensor to the left of the dipstick and above the oil filter had copper of the wires showing on both wires leading to it. When i tried to insulate them with tape the rubber insulation just broke away in my fingers as tho it had perished. This left aprrox 3 cm on bare wire on both wires leading to it before a thicker plastic shielding started. From the pic you can see that i have insultaed with tape what is visble but am concerned what this sensor is for and if this is a common problem ?

It's for the power steering pump mate. I think it's tell the pump how hard to pump.

I replaced mine as it started leaking fluid, cost £55, but your problem isn't related to the sensor, more the electrical connector. As long as the wires are connected, I can't see a problem, just make sure the insulation tape stays put.
