whats the best value for money mods youve done on a 182?

  182,mx-5 mk1,mev sonic 7
can we make this a sticky so that this doesnt get asked time and time again.
i havent modified yet but looking to do so in near future.

  Italian 3.2 V6
Well with my 172 which is basicly the same as 182's

so far if found that..
-lightweight 15"wheels
-ktec pannel filter
-ktec supersport recesses exhaust system

Anf Iv heard that..
-decat
-matched inlets
-remap

Are all the way forward to getting good response and good improvment fro
your 1*2. All in and remaped last should get you an extra 12-15bhp

Two best mods for me:

Smaller steering wheel - much better fun without having a wheel for a ship!
Sportlines - noticeable improvement to handling, more responsive turn in :)

I have had an RSTuner remap, but tbh I think the comments on here where people say it's transformed their car are slightly over exaggerated!

No not just out of the box it won't. It works thats for sure ! But if You add few extra quid for custom remap (best with AFR LC-1 sensor) it will show You its advantages. Not to mention its the only thing so far that talks to our ECU and You can have it at home :)
I used it to remap my ECU after CatCams 421 (custom remap with AFR), nothing even close to this price range could do the same

  TrackCar & F30 330d
If you want better handeling get Apex Springs ;) ONLY JOKING

Best mod i made was Coilovers, body role is dramitacly cut and turn in is so much sharper. Quite an expensive mod but worth the dosh

15" wheels, they've already paid for themselves in what i've saved buying 16" tyres

Have u tried the latest map revision from this month?

Hi Henk,

No I don't think I have.
Is this the latest (for CB22 engine)? - 8200_7804 RON98 CB22 May 2009 .cal

Do they significantly change each month? And I presume I dont need to reupdate the .rst file?

And I wasnt complaining or anything, I would still recommend the RSTuner, but from what I experienced, it was only small changes.

can someone explain this rs tuner thing please.do you go to a specific company to get this done or is it a handheld device which is sent out to you from same company to reflash the ecu?or both and can you get it live mapped on the rollers etc?
:D

I would do suspension and brakes first. Then learn how to drive the car properly before seeking power mods.

I agree but some people do the mods to aid driveability. For example a remap for a better torque curve, inlets/decat/exhaust to make it more responsive and free revving.

I'd only realy count power mods personally as cams, ITB's and forced induction. The other mods only see them nocking around standard power anyway.

I've had matched inlets = no difference; SS exhaust = nice sound but no difference; SS brake lines and DS2500 = no difference; Eibach's and Cup shocks = a small difference; ITG air filter = it felt better; Green Cotton air filter = it too felt better but in a different part of the rev range compared to the ITG. Gave up after that and didn't bother with any more stuff. Still love the car, will get another and won't bother making changes. Stripping out is probably best method IMO.

No offence but if you can feel a diference between two different air filters then you want to start advertising your services as a human rolling road!

thats what i thought not much difference to be had..... lighter is faster!!!!!!

Probably just as reliable as some RRs;)

It was my experience, that's all. The rest of the changes did sweet FA.

If you know your car well enough, you can easily tell whether an air filter makes it rev/pull better IMO.

All of the below mods made very very slight improvements IMO. Combined, however, they made a very nice car to drive. When I removed them (before sending the car back), there was a definite lack of oomph and zing when I drove the car.

In no particular order...

Lighter Wheels - Immediate difference felt in braking. I'm sure acceleration would benefit too, however it was difficult to tell at the time.

Increased offset - Front and rear track was widened by 14mm in total. That was combined with...

Eibach sportlines - Together with the wider track, tyre wear was SPOT ON despite trackdays/hard cornering. Understeer was reduced slightly and the car felt very neutral. The car felt very stable on bumps. Sideways FTW.

Braided Hoses + DS2500 + Superdot 4 fluid - Once hot (very hot), the DS2500s are absolutely superb! Rears didn't last long though - can't think why. Gut-wrenching braking when combined with....

Strut brace (front) - People may argue that they're useless, however under braking I felt that it really stabilised the front. The car tracked beautifully IMO.

Gearbox mount bushings - they caused the most horrendous vibrations whilst idling, however the drivetrain felt a bit sharper.

Green Cotton Filter - I doubt it increased peak power, however it sharpened things up as far as acceleration was concerned - it felt as if the air was always available as soon as I hit the throttle.

Decat - I believe there was an improvement at the very top end of the rev range. A lovely zippy/zingy sound too.

I can't remember anything else I did, but if I do I'll update the post. :)

Oms.

Oms makes sense to me
when knowing your car through + through you will notice any difference done to it.

My best ones; losing weight as mentioned (!) , exhaust front to end (no cat) inlets/filter and Colombo & Bariani cams custom mapped by Henk (fastchip.nl) . 182 exhaustmanifold was also done at that time but i do'nt know exactly what effect this gave. The 172 Cup now makes almost the exact powerband of a new 197 Clio, only mine weighs 960 kg's :approve:

Car goes like mad, lot more fun than my late 270 hp Scooby . Sweaty hands/ steeringwheel every thrash run

Wheels are hardly a value for money mod, it's purely aesthetic. Although DrRollo mentioned a saving in buying 15" tyres over 16". Fair comment as they are a fair whack cheaper, but then it depends how much you pay for the new wheels and how much you get for your old ones, if indeed you sell them etc etc etc.

I'd be inclined to say no mod is value for money, because you'll rarely see that money again. But if you want to do it, do it.

When going for a 15 inch wheel it is'nt for the looks, they are chosen for lighter weight which bring very good results in handling/accelaration+deccelaration

This is a mod i would still like to do. Had some Magnesium 15" on order but i cancelled because of a sudden risk of job-loss.

  #174
Powerflex dogbone mount, 35 quid and improves the gearbox feel.

Carbon lorraine pads too, big improvement over a standard setup for what is a relatively small cost.

Here-say mate.

There are plenty of other things you can do to a car's suspension that will give better results per £ than super light wheels. Trust me, I wouldn't be about to put Rota RBs on my car if I thought it would impair the handling (they weigh about 7 or 8kg each, where the Enkeis I was looking at weigh 4.5kg but cost 3x more).

And Magnesium wheels are really not a wise move on the road, they're soft to the point that they can buckle if you hit a hard bump, they're designed for top end race use where they can afford to throw away a set of wheels at every meeting for the sake of a few more kg's.

  rps13
'group n' engine mounts and strip, coilovers.

Dont bother with power unless you're going for bodies*

*decat& panel filter will make the car feel how it should.

  Clio 197
Were the tyres the same? (I.e. transferred from one set of wheels to the other)

Not at first, but at some point I had the exact same tyres on both sets rims... literally had them swapped at the garage within 30 mins and drove off again.

IIRC, std wheels with tyre - 15kg, and the superleggs with tyre were 12kg.

I would be inclined to agree with a lot of the posts here, i even reverted to the standard engine map the other day, you can only really achieve small results on a budget with a NA engine, all of which will be hardly noticeable.
