whats your opinions Vs 106gti...

hi... A friend of mine has a 106gti and fancied a play next time were at the next santa pod meet.
Mine is a 172ff... Both cars are near standard.. just with exhaust systems.

How would you expect the turnout to be??

According the parkers the clio is a fair bit quicker.. But I think the 106gti's are also quite underestimated too. They seem quicker than the time stated on parkers!

172s dont make the book bhp figure, and 106 gtis with a few breather mods and a remap would quite easily keep up with a std 172 as they only weigh about 950kgs
 
Been covered at least 8 trillion times.

Get a bad start, fluff a gear change and he'll beat you. Theres f**k all in it anyway.

unless my m8's 106gti was a bit of a sardine my valve pulled away from it
with no real problem :cool: and he drives like a loon

had two 106 gtis in the past, the last 1 was cammed with breathing mods and it was quiker than my mates ff 172, standard vs standard it down to the driver imo
 
when top gear tested the ph1 172 vs. the saxo vts (which we all know is basically a 106GTi) the 172 was quicker on the straights but the Saxo kept with it/gained on it in the corners.

Sounds like there's no room for even the slightest of errors.

best thing to do is mod the 172. take out the spare wheel and back seats, and get a s/s exhaust, decat, matched inlets and a remap.

After 60 mph you will pull away.As for handling they are fantastic.A reasonably well sorted one will easy keep with a clio in the twisty stuff

I had a race around last sunday night in Bedford with my mate's GTI, he has that chipped, and pulled away from me in the first two gears, but my top end was soo much better!

Above 80 they really begin to struggle.

I have been in a quick GTI and VTS. The gti had a few mods and struggled from 75 imo and vts got undone at 90. The vts had a number of mods though, cams, headwork, chipped, air filter, exhaust and stripped. Would have slaughtered the willy tbf. Above 90 though it was fairly similar.

You'll take him - but won't really pull anything out till near the end of the 1/4. If it was a half mile instead you'd get quite a nice lead hehe :)

you beat him! my mate has i a gti with a super sprint manifold and full stainless and an ecosse induction kit and my mk1 16v hybrid spanks him and i have only got a cat back stainless and a panel filter!

only just, as said before, yove got to get a gd start, those 106 gtis wiegh the same as a rich tea biscuit, and are FAST.

depends on driver, you will do it as long as u don`t fluff it up lol. i.e miss a gear or sit there spinning for half n hour ;), let the front tires down abit b4 for extra traction

Both cars were similair pace all the way from 60-100+

He had a slight edge, but was minimal.

The VTS/GTi is a very underated car and handle very well. Far better than my old Valver. Cheap to buy and service too. Don't need to be a contortist to change the oil filter either.

Not in my experience. My Cup v my mates VTS = No contest, and that was with a bad start from me. I pulled a good few lengths by 100. The Cup is a good 4-5 seconds quicker to 100.
 
People seem to forget the Clio is actually the fastest car ever in the world.

The GTi has no chance and the gap is MASSIVE, however when the Clio races something like an Evo/M3 the gap is tiny!

Meh, who cares anyway. The clio is miles nicer than gti or vts (chav-mobiles) and faster as well, even though ever gti or VTS owner will tell you they have bummed their "mates" 1*2 loads of times.

i've been reading them for years and I dont get bored because they always end up amusing once they reach this stage

Having owned both (well 182 but close enough lol) I can say that the 106 is a VERY capable car but the 182 is definately quicker in a straight line!!

Don't get me wrong, the 106 was quick but the clio would definetly pull away from a 106. Wouldn't destroy it but would pull away relatively comfortably.
