when is 172/182 in its prime?

  172 Cup
So i recently purchased a 172 cup, 58k 2 owners, full dealer history, mint 53 reg for £3800. I said I just want it for a bit of fun on a temp basis til i get a bit more cash and can get a newer 200 or something similar.

Anyway the more i think the more i just want to modify it and look after it and keep it in the family til it dies! So what im asking is....can you warrant spending loads of cash to modify it, breathing mods, coilies, seats, wheel refurb, etc you know the drill...

172 cup, with eibach sportlines, a cat back system (not a underslung oval or twin tip) decent tyres, rs tuner remap.

enjoy :D

if you plan to keep it, it's worth spending what you want to/can afford. People that spunk thousands, then sell everything after a couple of months will never get their moneys worth. If you're doing it for the love of it, then the value doesn't really matter

Standard, the clios are great to drive, if you don't want to do much then I'd say get coilovers and uprated brakes (even if just pads and braided lines), they make a massive difference for what they cost, so are good value. And it's free to strip out the rear which helps further. On top of that, good tyres and servicing and it'll be a lot of fun.

But as Danny says, if you want to keep it, and doing it for the love, then I'd go down the road of matched inlets, induction, remap, exhaust, seats, lighter wheels...

Mine's on 86k and *seems* to be much healthier/ keener to rev than a few 40, 50, 60k examples I drove when looking for mine.

I've just spent a bit making mine feel special, but I just want something M3-shaped :)

 >> I have a short attention span and get easily bored...

I'll break something if you're just bored. How expensive would you like boredom to be? ;)

:) Dude, you've only just fixed it for me! - - - - - Don't get me wrong, the Cup rocks! I just don't think I've ever needed to spend so much money in such a short period of ownership...

In 2010 alone:
- Complete set of OE engine mounts in Nov 09 (Polybush dogbone)
- New OE steering wheel in Nov 09
- New PZero Neros in Nov 09 (done 3k - still have 5+mm all round)
- Eibach Sportlines in Dec 09
- Major oil leak fixed + new belts Jan 10
- Wheels refurbed in Jan 10
- Brembo HC's/ Mintex 1144/ Goodridge lines/ Castrol Response DOT4 - Feb 10
- AST top mounts *NEW and unfitted*

Admittedly, the car will hopefully now run, trouble-free for a few months/ years before needing major outlay again?

SWMBO is getting upset that I keep spending £££ on the car, not her (ASW? :) x)

Thinking about it, maybe I should just STFU and enjoy the bloody thing now it's all working as intended?

Tbh I have no desire to keep the 1.2, so any money spend more than tidying it up is in my eyes a waste.

If I had a 1*2, it would just be the prime things. Coils, exhaust, seats and wheels depending.

This.

I've taken quite a lot of stick from people because I've spent thousands on mine. What they fail to understand is that when I have a car that I really like, I keep it for a long time and make it "my own". The value comes from enjoying the car regarless of cost. If I couldn't afford to do it / run it, I wouldn't. Simples.

As for in their prime, I'd say once they've done about 70k plus and get driven hard on a regular basis - the engines seem to free up nicely as they're used more. Regular maintenance is key as well - cambelts and aux belts should be done on time or sooner and services done at the correct intervals (or less). It's no good driving around on cheap / poor / worn tyres or brakes either because you won't get the best out of the car.
In short, I'd much rather own a mint condition and well maintained 70,000+ miler than a 24k "detailed every day of its life but never driven properly" example. I don't think the lower mileage car would be quite the car it "could" be, if you get me?

mine is an 04 on 59k and feels better than ever. (a few interior rattles tho). mainly down to the k-tec engine mounts, wouldn't change them back to standard tho, made the car feel and respond much better. everything feels tight and direct.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
spoken like a man whos been there done that pmsl.

Would I offend anyone if I said

when they are scrapped.

I was going to say when some c**t gave you some money to take it off your hands. But I used a similar expression on v6clio, and there's someone on there called 'Some c**t'.

Fail.
