When will the price of 197's plummet?

  1 of 19 Recaro'd 182 Cups
Sold my 182 a couple of months back and with not being a fan of the RS200 im in the market for a 197.

Thing is i dont want to pay £9-10k for a car thats inveitibly going to depreciate rapidly in the same way the 182 has over the last 8-12 months.

I know nobody can predict this for sure but im keen to buy, do we think the release of the 200 will have any affect on the second hand prices of 197's? The last thing i want to do is pay £9k for one and it be worth 5-6k this time next year.

Well my 197 Cups worth more now than when i bought it;)
The fact that it's whites a bonus:D
Buy the best you can find but ain't many for 8K yet only CAT or rubbish.

I don't think the 200 will have much of affect on prices tbh, when the new clio comes along that's when they will drop a bit more.

  S3, Polo
Look at the life-cycle of the 172/ 182 and make an educated guesstimate based on that.

Not too quickly, the 200 hasnt got much of a following yet.
I'll be looking for a 197 next summer though..

You'll be waiting forever. They wont drop 2k over night for example. Pay 8k for a rubbish one now, or 8k for a nice one at Christmas. Its all relative.

lol tbh, i don't have a clue what the 197 is worth. i thought mine was a sub 8k one due to age (nov 2006), milage (36k) and spec (spec being poverty spec, only option metallic paint), but now i reckon it could be just over 8k...

Its well noted that the value of white cars will be less than other colours when the colour goes out of 'fashion', i feel its had its day already. 197's have held their value well imo for the last couple of years but there always comes a point when values drop and they fact they haven't yet worries me when parting with 9k of my saved up cash. Im expecting depreciation over time, thats expected but id be gutted if i bought a 182 this time last year.

tbh, i don't personally see that the 182 have fallen off this imagined cliff either. all seem to be descending as per normal really. oh yeah, i bought a car a year ago, it is now worth less... shock?

Indeed. Mint ones are stil 6k + are they not?

As said, you'll be waiting forever with that mentality.

Paid £8k for my 182 a year ago, wonder what it's worth now.

Life is short, live for the moment fella. If you want one, get one now as who knows what tomorrow brings.

You could be waiting forever with that attitude, they'll always be depreciating...

Nothing beats the look on the wife's face when you turn up in a car she wasn't expecting.

Once told her I was getting a new Impreza Sport - Turned up in the Turbo and I thought she was going to kill me.

Life's for living - if you want a new car - go get one.

But you will lose a lot of money the second you sign for it - hey ho :D

White is probably one of the best colours for a 197 or 200.
The fact mine has 'full house' as well is a benefit :D
Knowing when to jump is the key;) 9K for a trophy last sept just as prices fell off a cliff:cool:

That's my point dude, trophys £9k+ this time last year and now tidy examples go for circa £7k, don't want this to happen with the 197 as would rather wait and buy for less.

Every car has dropped loads??

We are in a recession remember.

  BMW 320 M Sport, 197
Yep the recession is a big factor. I too am in the process of looking for a 197 cup and you will always loss money on a car, unless it's exotic, rare or dirt cheap!

For example a friend of mine bought a 205 for £40. It was involved in an accident, and had to go into some bushes to avoid being killed. Car came out only needing a new wing mirror.

He went on to sell the car 1 year later for £80, doubling his money!

My advice, I think the 197 is going to hold it's money better as the 200 is ugly! I could buy a 200 but I don't like them, 197 cup ftw!! :)

The 200 will not hold its money any better than the Williams/172/182/197/200

They will plummet like every generation aswell as the next, why would it be any different? There was probably simillilar discussion when the 172 plans emerged 10 years ago, look where we are now, i cant think how the 197 would be any different.

One 197 sold on PH recently for £8600, 25,000 miles.

The time will come when you can pick up a 197 for 5k

If anything, id say the 197 is coming down quicker than the 1*2 imho

Correct however the price of BMW, Audi and Minis are still similar to what they were last year before the credit crunch as they are renowned for holding there values and as much as i love Reanults, the only one id have that has held its value well is the V6.

It seem that some people feel the prices will never drop  whilst others say they will depreciate steadily and some hold out 6 months or so and grab a bargain. Now im even more ->:S

TBF Trophy prices have held well. Steve's was the exception, not the rule. Absolutely mint, looked after, low mileage.
If you'll be keeping it for a few years, may as well buy now. If there's a sudden drop in prices, there's usually a slower decline afterwards.

Thats the trouble, i only tend to keep cars for 12 months max by which time i get bored, in the 2 years ive had:

Corsa Gsi
Lupo GTi
Brabus Roadster Coupe
Mini Cooper S JCW
MG ZR(Run about)
Clio 182 Cup

The Clio has been my favourite out of the lot, hence considering the 197. Its a good balance of peformance, lowish running costs(in comparison to RX-8's ive been looking at), Styling and value for money, as i can get a 2007 for the price of a 2004 mini. The question is, now or wait, but tbf im a live for the moment kind of guy so might just go for it...lol.

its not a house cars loose money, i dont usually bother, if i want something i buy it, usually its worth it anyway, id rather have a 197 while they were newish than have one in 2 years when they are discontinued, out of warranty and someone else has teh newer model in ur street!! maby thats just me being a snob LOL

  White clique
There dont seem to be too many modified 197s out there, a majority are standard.

When they start getting to the age where loads of modded ones show and they are the majority, thats when i think they will drop.

I think it could be a couple of years yet before they are silly money.

  GW Clio 200
I dont think they are going to plummet on the strength of the 200 being released. They are still a very desirable car. if you bought the car new then the longer you have the car the better off you will be when coming to sell..

Its people like me that lose money on cars, I sell them too quickly because I get bored..and so always get stung in the ass!!!

  BMW 320d M-Sport
I hope they never depreciate. Well for the next few weeks at least. May be losing my job so it needs a new home for a stunning price if it happens! Otherwise, it can wait until a couple years plz!

You only have to look at Civic Type R's - 04 and 05 plates are still £8-10k!

abit of a bump, it seems that they have inevitably taking the same sort of route as the 1*2's, as they range from about 8 - 12k now and its possible for these to fall below trophy prices... but would getting a trophy be a better purchase?
