where to find Engine and 'Frame' Number?

my new insurance policy people have decided they want me to declare my engine number and frame (i assume chassis) number, but where abouts do i find it?

thanks, i got my chassis number from the doc, but it says 'engine number: unknown'

as this is for insurance purposes, do you think if I provide a photo copy of the reg doc to prove it's unknown that will be acceptable? I will call them and ask i guess

It is on the front of the engine block, on the right hand side (when looking at it from front). It is on a little flat raised area right next to the gearbox, just above the sump. They corrode badly and can be very difficult to see.
