Who knows about sony minidisc HU’s-Help!!

Ive had a MDX-C8500R minidisc head unit for about 3-4 years now. Im not running an amp/aftermarket speakers etc, just the HU.

This problem has happened a few times but not this long. Basically, theres no sound from a minidisc when playing but it spins round ok if that makes sense?! I get the radio and everything else works so it cant be a connection failure to the speakers etc. Would it be the optic/laser??

Are these things repairable, is it expensive? Any comments would be great.

More than likely the laser is worn out.

Really depends on where repairs it as to how much it costs in labour prices.

sounds like mine, although mine just kept blowing fuses for fun, would work then p!ss me about

i undid all the little screws and blew it and sucked it with a hoover and now it works like its brand new, stupid thing was, it was broken on and off for over a month, then after a i fixed it, i recieve a letter saying my warranty is due to run out lol

had no idea i still had warranty on the old bugger, its been in 5 cars and a couple of crashes and its still going strong!!

take the top off and see if a clean will maybe help, u can prob get the unit 2nd hand off ebay for about £60

I just spoke to an authorised sony repaierer in Romford. They want 40 quid to open it up and as usual couldnt give me a ball park figure for the final cost. But, the 40 quid does get deducted at the end.

If its not working then it needs doing so off to Romford on saturday...wicked.

have they garanteed to even fix it mate, u could pay £40 and get nothing from it

how much is the unit on ebay??

its piss easy 2 take the top of the unit off, even i managed to do it lol

sounds like petes right though so something will need to be replaced, sony are gay, i asked them to send me a wiring diagram of mine so i could check everything was fine and no connections were broken, they refused and said id have to pay £20 for it lol

I found one on ebay for £51, still bidding. And thats the whole unit, face, manuals etc and boxed. Im a bit blonde when it comes to ebay, never used it so wouldnt know what to do!!

Also wouldnt there be a chance of that one going kapput soon given their age? So something will need to be fixed in the end anyway.

yea ur right, ebay can be dodgy and u could get a dud, + u have prob grown close 2 ur hu after all these years

mines been with me since my first car and still does its job well so im happy!

id check what happens if they cant fix it and also maybe ask them and see how theyd charge to replace the lazer part maybe?

least then ull know what kind of money ull be paying beforehand
