Why did I do it? Never take my 182 to jet washes, but on Friday I was going a long drive up to Oban and I wanted the car to look good on the way up. It was a bit dirty from the salt on the roads so I thought I'd just give a quick blast with a the jet wash at my local Shell.

Driving home and noticed a scratch on the windscreen, then another, then another and another etc. Scratched all over. No point going back th the shell cause I wouldn't be able to prove anything. The weird thing is the paint work seems fine. I maybe had sand or grit on the window.

Phoned my dealer and they quoted £204 plus vat for windscreen labour not included

Does anyone know if Autoglass or anyone can get scrathes out or Chipsaway, or anyone like that. Tried Autglym to clean it and that helped a bit. Vinegar did too but there are still a lot of scratches. Quite a deep one in my line of vision.
Saw an old post with a link to a company called frost who sell a thing that goes on the end of a drill bit and polishes away scrathes, not sure about that though.

What will I do?

Can't you just get the windscreen on your insurance? Assuming you are fully comp, and if you're not you should be :rasp: , you just pay the £50 odd excess and voila! new windscreen. Did this with my Bravo when it got a big chip in the drivers' line of sight.

My insurance never gave a toss when I phoned them. If you're prepared to fork out £50 it must need doing, no? Even if that were true, a swift tap with one of your missus' stiletoes might see it right.

No, doesn't affect your no cliams a jot unless you do it more than once in a year or something. You don't need to declare it either when renewing/changing afaik. Sure someone more insurance minded would clarify this. Better still dig out your policy and call your insurance company.

yeah the ywill provide, but you need a gel pack for the auto wipers

whenever the screen is replaced the "gel pack" on the rain sensor must be replaced also, regardless of whether it is intact or not

My brother had a badly scratched windscreen and insurance wouldnt pay for it as they said it wasnt cracked or chipped. Pretty s**t really as it still needed replacing as it was dangerous. Might be best to crack it yourself if going through insurance or they might turn round and say no.

my screen really needs doing too, massice chip in it.

doubt the insurance would pay out unless it was actually cracked.... small hammer in the corner usaully does the job a treat lol

Do what my old boy did years ago. Ring a claim through, arrange for a fitting at a nearby autoglass centre. Drive down and stop around the corner. He used a glass hammer which you find on trains and coaches to make what was a little chip a very neat but very messy spiders web crack across the screen. Get back in the car, drive 10ft round the corner et voila.
