Why I love Apple.

I took my MacBook Pro in to the Apple store at the Trafford Centre yesterday because when I was working in the garden with it the other day, I noticed there was slight discolouration around the side of the case.

Now, I'm extremely picky about stuff like this, and when I say 'slight discolouration' I really do mean slight. So off to the Apple store to get it looked at, and probably get looked at like a weird OCD mong, then escorted off. Or so I thought.

Genius appointment comes and I explain how it's a niggle to me etc etc. Next thing, he looks at it, totally agrees with me, to he point of getting his mate to see it too, then he's extremely apologetic about the whole situation and they agree to either exchange the device, or swap it for a brand new case. Since I had not backed up everything on my Time Capsule beforehand  I decided to go for the case replacement.

Bearing it mind mine's a late '09 model, with the Unibody, the case is basically the whole unit, and every component fixes to it. So how long to do all this, I ask. 'Ahh, come back in an hour mate' Done.

It's great that folks at the Apple store are as passionate about the products as you are, and they really don't mind footing the bill for such a tiny issue. The bill, if I was paying, would have been over £600.

One happy customer.

Nope. But even if he did, the HDD is one of the last things to uncover, as it's bolted right underneath the Unibody. Still a big job!

They replaced my keyboard too, it smells new and delicious.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

Same happened with me a while back.

I had a white polycarb MB, case discoloured and then developed a tiny crack.

So they replaced the top casing and the display casing. (£250) and agreed to repair the bottom casing when i had backed up my data. During this time i inserted my HDD the wrong way round, snapped off the Sata connector from the bottom casing and literally almost cried!

Took it back to Apple in the hope they could fix it for a reasonable price.

SATA connection is part of the bottom case anyway mate, so i wouldn't worry

A week later i had a brand new casing and a properly installed drive! For nothing!

You just don't get this level of service with anyone else. I'm about to replace my 3GS too (hairline cracks) and i imagine the same easy process will occur.

So what your saying is apple equipment is of poor quality? And apple don't mind fixing it cos it's only cheap tat?

Re: Why I love a Apple.

LOL. Yeah, they're spot on, every time.

Can you imagine trying to return a product of equal value to PC World, with the same defect? You'd be stabbed and dumped in the bins round the back.

LOL. Nice alert statement.

Would you consider £600 to replace an aluminium case, cheap? Are you dk?

They are superb as is the service, which i'm sure is part of the reason we pay getting on for 3x what an equivalent windows machine would cost. However, every Apple product i've owned has been flawless and their staff largely speaking know their products very well and will do what they can to help you out.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

Indeed. At least the Apple Geniuses are highly attractive and fashionably dressed.

They also manage a conversation without using "init" "Bruv" "Dunno" and "Erm"

Re: Why I love a Apple.

They don't question very much to be honest, I'll be going back next weekend with my 3GS to get another, as the case has cracked again around the silent switch. People who don't fuss on and just change something please me.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

iPhone customer service was a revolution to me.

And i've worked in the Phone industry on and off for over 5 years.
We used to use every trick in the book to not replace phones for people.

They just do it, without question, instantly.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

I'm going to take my 3GS in and ask them to swap it for the 4G.

They'll probably say yes, then show me how to use it.

It's cracking service tbh.

Though you do have to question the quality of the product in the first place, they do crack at an alarming rate.

LOL quality.

Yeah I've never had any trouble with Apple's service, unlike my previous laptop that I bought from comet, bloody useless. Their staff know what they're talking about and are happy to help - very rare nowadays!

Has yours yet?

I've had mine a year and started to see cracks last week.
Obviously the pimp white ones suffer more. (Mine is white)

Roll on Glass/Ceramic and Aluminium in a couple of months. The 2G never had such issues.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

Luckily no. I took it out the case and inspected it thoroughly yesterday as it happens. It's only 4 months old mind.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

Yeah, my white one's got a tiny crack near the dock connector, but I think that's my fault TBH. I should be more careful when docking it in the car.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

Just took mine out of it's case for an inspection again. A few hairline cracks around the silent switch and just noticed some around the on/off button. Except for those it's pretty perfect. They're upsetting me.

I wonder if they'll replace my screen cover too if they give me a new one? Hmmm.

Re: Why I love a Apple.

Ahh I see, got a white iPhone 3GS on saturday to replace my black 3G which did have a crack, but then I did throw it on the sofa and it bounced off and hit the coffee table :S

Re: Why I love a Apple.

They replaced my iPhone USB cable FOC when that developed a split near the end that connects to the phone.
They replaced the DVD-ROM drive in my Mac Mini when it started making a clicking sound - again FOC.

My old boss had the original MBP (i.e; not the unibody one). He had an argument with his Mrs and she smacked the laptop down on the table, causing the whole case to crease and the screen to shatter. He had accidental damage cover, took it into an Apple store to get it mended and had it back in half an hour. Can't complain at that.

On the whole, Apple products aren't poor quality or unreliable. As with any mass produced product you're going to get manufacturing defects from time to time. Apple are one of the most stringent companies on the planet when it comes to quality control as most Apple fanboi's will agree. They take pride in the quality of their equipment which is why they often revise specifications soon after common problems are found. It's also one of the reasons they don't mind replacing stuff that has minor defects. That and the fact that they make more than enough money from their products because a) they have a cult following - people will buy Apple products because of the badge, and b) they are quite a lot more expensive than similarly specced non-apple products.
Personally, I don't mind paying more money for something that looks nice, performs well, retains its value better than most electronic equipment and comes with excellent customer service.

And no, I'm not an Apple fanboi. I only have a Mac Mini and an iPhone 3GS (and an MBP on the way). I've got a lot more than 3 non-Apple products - usually stuff that does the job better than the Apple equivalent.

Personally, I would have told you to get fcuked! :rasp: A non-working Maccy is one thing - a slight colour fault is completely another.

Then again, Apple have a reputation to excel with customer services. If they can deal with a case-colour issue, it bode's well for when serious problems arise.

Good on you Chrissy for trying and getting a result though. I don't think I'd have the front to even try something that anal. ;)

yup. no problem. as long as you dont have water damage (they check for) and you havent obviously dropped it.

they will be a little less quick to change it over if it is right by the dock, as i think people tend to cause this damage deliberatly, and they know about it

Re: Why I love a Apple.

Surely it's "An Apple" or just "Apple".

I R confused.

Good work fanboy, you'll be getting staff discount soon the amount of times you go in there.

Ooooh, I forgot about my duff charger which has split. They can replace that too if they don't mind. LOL.

Argh, it is but the dock connector, I didn't personally drop it - my brothers gf 2 yr old pulled it from my hands, hit the floor and has a little crack on the back about 1cm long... Reckon I could blag it? or isit claimed as my fault?

  E87 118d M Sport
has it got any form of "dent" by the crack which looks like impact damage?

they will ask you some quetions about how you look after it, where you charge it (do you use a dock stand etc) which im sure is to gauge their reposnse, but in my situation they were by the silent slider, so 100% a fault.

you may as well try it before may 5th mate, got nothing to lose. if they say no, your where you are now.

  Audi S1
tbh mate it hasnt really got no other marks on it. It has slightly discoloured around the rim, but that's wear n tear. I will take it to a shop soon then :).
