ok, 2nd post of the day, but also came from having a look around the engine bay!!!!

on both front wheels there are pink wires that come from the engine bay area and go onto the rear brake caliper. does anyone know what they do?? is it a warning sustem to let you know when your pads are getting low??

Yes it is, when these sensor comes into contact with your discs a red light should show on your dash. Mine dont work tho - think the blubs blown

yes there pad warning light wires(wear indicator wires)
