I am going to get the steering arm rods replaced on my williams. A garage has quoted me £60 labour (two hours) plus the genuine renault rods as a pair at £71.68 (including VAT). Is it worth getting the genuine Renault ones? Does this seem reasonable?

I am going to get the steering arm rods replaced on my williams. A garage has quoted me £60 labour (two hours) plus the genuine renault rods as a pair at £71.68 (including VAT). Is it worth getting the genuine Renault ones? Does this seem reasonable?
sounds alright, i was looking at the williams re-build site last night and there is more involved then i thought, have a look in the buying guide section. the price sounds fair and &75 for the part will give peace of mind it correct at least, the garage might get a discount on the parts from what you pay.
make sure they re-set the tracking properly not just marking the or counting the same number of threads never ends up being the same, as i reset loads where mechanics had replaced rod ends or similar wound it back exactly to the tippex brough it in and its miles out! Any reptuble gaarge willdo this of course
I would be very intrested to see if it corrects it because it sertainly seems like the obvious thing. And i have been considering doing the same thing myself
Didnt think there was any point going down the replacement rack route until i try the easy things. There is definately a loose joint between the rack and the arm rod, so even if it doesnt completely correct the loose steering it will stop the os wheel wobbling, which has got to help a small amount with handling. Its going in on thursday so ill let you know how it goes.
cant reply to you king.stromba about this (you PMd me) as your box is full. There was only one side of mine with play so only changed that arm. You can buy them seperate from rack, I paid reno dealer about £58 or so for passenger side one, which includes rod end, hope that helps. It made a absolutely huge difference in my valver, so hopefully you will get similar results.

Not having a dig but replies like that are best posted rather then PMd as it will help people no end in trying to sort out little problems. Someone could easily have replaced the rack and column before realising he could have just spent £100 on two control arms - if you see what i mean
Yeah i thought we were taking about the control rod / steering arm rod, the bit that attatches to the rack at the inside edge and the track rod at the outside egde?

I got an email back from The Williams re-build chap - Mark but it confuses me further!

The track control arm is basically the bottom arm - and i would imagine its the bushes on the inner pivoting end you have heard about. Not come across those wearing out though, but the steering rack inner balljoints are something that wears out. You can buy the kits from renault - although due to their design are a real pain to remove, but even harder to fit correctly without the correct fitting tool.
Check the track rod ends first, then anti roll bar bushes in track control arm, then top strut ball race and rubber/metal top nut flange. A new modified flange is made now that sits on the strut mount area better. The ball race can dry out - making the steering less smooth to turn, but the power steering can mask this problem.
Im finding it hard to distinguish between the rod and the inner ball joint, did someone say the rods include the inner ball joints???

Anyone know if you can buy this special tool from anywhere? would be a handy thing to have in the toolbox so you can change the control arms when they get fooked.
The rods must incude the ball joint because the guy asked if i knew if they were male or female coupling.

there are two different types of track arms and track rod ends, male and female. as far as i know, the inner ball joint is always the same.

. Just phoned the garage and they havnt ordered the control rods because they dont know whether the rod end is male or female. So when goes in tomorrow they will look and then ill have to take it in again. Why didnt they look the first time i brought it in?, and why didnt they phone me? If i hadnt of phoned them i wouldnt have known until i went out of my way to take it in. WHY AM I SURROUNDED BY FOOLS? RIGHT THEY CAN GO F*CK THEMSELVES ILL TAKE MY CASH SOMEWHERE ELSE. LOSERS..
