Wilwood 4pots - pad wear rate?

  RB 182
I'm running what I can assume is the K-Tec wilwood kit with standard size Brembo max and DS2500 pads...

I've done 2 trackdays at Donny and they have worn down to the backing plate, is this something people have experianced with this kit or similar? I've used DS2500 on standard calipers in the past and they have gone through plenty of trackdays with no problem.

Whilst the 4 pots seem to hold out better under heavy breaking, I'm shocked at the wear rate of the pads. My only thought is that the grooved brembo max discs are cutting down the pad at a faster rate. Any help/pointers would be smashing

Poor memory sorry "The Fred", I've put the mintex back on till they cheese grate away then slap the DS3000 on with plain discs. Do you think they are the sole reason? I know you think wilwood are poo anyway.

the pads don't come with much material on them anyway do they?

it can also boil down to the old problem (well in my eyes) of smaller pad, greater/same piston area but in a 4pot being asked to do the same stopping effort as the OE setup

i ran 1144's in my hispec calipers and nailed them in 1day at bedford

Sam said you had a brake fluid leak or something?

are the willwood 4pots a significant improvement over your average hc&ds2500 setup?

One bleed nipple was lose but only a dribble came out. This was towards the end when I felt the pads going off and then Nick taking Sam out for a drive and pads were non existant. I'm glad I didn't push for that extra lap lol, also glad Nick didn't have the issue at a fast place on the track!

Yeah the DS range are only 9mm thick, mintex about 12mm. I wont run the mintex on track, just using them up till I throw on new discs.

Significant, no. I'd say they are an improvement over brake fade but it's not a night/day thing you notice. Not for cheap/midrange 4 pots anyway. I'm slightly for them over OE but not a huge amount, the pads are only £56 which is a bonus however.

i'll see if i can get you mintex F4 pads, proper pads them!

got these knocking about, might struggle getting them under a 15inch wheel though

awww look at the tiny pistons

Tiny because the caliper is Huuuuuge!

Fred, I don't mind that at all. If it's a worthwile purchase then i'll slap the wilwoods on the track car when we get it.

Back to your original point about the 4 pots doing the same work as OE setup. Are you saying the smaller pads are worse off becasue they require less stopping power? ie the clio setup is too much for them?

I'm curious exactly what the surface area is on the standard pads compared to 4 pot ones...

how does the pad size in the 4pots compare to the oem pad?

how much smaller is it?

edit: i really should read the posts fully befor replying:eek:

smaller pads will wear faster and have a smaller heat capacity. There will be no difference in braking power between a small and large pad.

Fred are pads supposed to leave an edge around the disc?

My 4pot alcons are paired with Porsche 924 pads as alcons don't make the FRP pads anymore but I still get the ridge around the disc.

Oh at £400 a pair I don't want to wreck them! I think i'm going to have to bite the bullet and go 2 piece from hi spec or similar. Saves cash in the long run if i'm keeping it!

Stupid offset f**king discs!

They had an issue with the backing shims/plates aswell so that might be a cause. Decent shims help with the brake squeal. Common issue unless up to temp.
