Win 7 boot programs help!!

I am repairing a friends laptop that the owner decided to go through the boot menu and delete things that theythought would speed it up, resulting in the computer not booting...

The recovery partition shows on the hard drive but the other partition i would think the data is in is not showing up when using the hard drive as a slave...

The computer boots asking if the recovery program needs to kick in... this is clicked and doesn't kick in...

Starting normal it hands at the loading screen then restarts...

Any suggestions please?

Boot from the Windows 7 DVD and select Startup Repair. Windows will look for the operating system on the hard disk and work backwards from there. No user action needed after you kick the repair off.

If this fails, you can reinstall Windows 7 over the existing build by booting from the Windows 7 DVD and choosing to do an upgrade to the current OS (choose to install in the same place). Although it says upgrade, this is known as a Windows Repair (not Startup Repair that you should try first) and will reinstall the OS but will preserve the data.

Hope this helps.

Cheers for the help mate, im trying to get it into safe mode as they say it was definatly working before... its hanging at safe mode with network... just trying normal safe mode to see if that makes any difference...

Its hanging at \drivers\atipcie.sys again i dont know if that means anything...

I have a repair disk made from my own win7, will that work on there win7 laptop?

Any windows 7 disc will work to get to the system restore.

atipcie.sys will be the graphics driver stuff.

Best bet is to boot to startup repair and resotre to before it died!

Okay, just trying the disk...it loaded the files and its hanging at a blank screen now... could be a fun night ahead...

Ok where it hung in start mode must have been a coincidence don't think its anything to do with the graphics for sure

Dont know what to do next... if my win 7 is x64 and theres is x32 will it still be alright, the disk?

64 bit and 32 bit aren't compatible (certainly for drivers). Haven't tried doing a restore that way.

Ive got both disks now... just burning... ill try a 32bit... it loaded files, went to the green sliding (loading) bar and then its hanging again at a black screen...

Might have to give up and install a a fresh copy but dont really want too...

Hanging again...

Tried both x64 and x32 disks...

When i tried to use the drive as a slave (its a 500gb) there was one partition that wasn't showing up... wouldn't recognise... and "data" 250gb with just a recovery file in there... nothing click able... but would there be a 250gb partition just for recovery? seems a bit odd to me? the other 250gb i would guess wasn't even showing up... that doesn't sound normal for just a simple deleted start up file?

Could the hard drive be corrupt now?

Last post before i give up i think, there was no recovery of the drive just wouldnt work...

Im getting "F:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." Im using CHKDSK /F now...

I dont think its going to work... its going to ask me to format it, is there any other programs i can use to get the HD partition to recover?

I get system repair or start normally... system repair does nothing... start normally hangs at the windows logo....

Both x32 and x64 restore disks load then go to a black screen..

Hard drive is showing data as "parameter is incorrect" and the recovery side is just a few recovery files...

Fixmbr... is that to get me booting or to fix the parameter problem?

Cheers for your help.

Do you ever see this screen?

Nah mate that never showed up, it just loaded and went to a black screen, and hanged there...

Cheers

I think you need to go into the bios and tell it to boot from disk, it's still trying to boot up windows from the hdd as normal otherwise.

If you don't get that screen then you can't have done a Startup Repair. Startup Repair will do a Fixboot & FixMBR for you as part of the process. Agreed that you need to ensure that you are booting from the DVD. do you get the option to press a key (usually esc) to enter boot options?

I know this thread is quite old but I have the exact same problem as the original poster.

When using startup repair or booting from a recovery disk, the laptop just hangs either on a black screen with just a cursor or a screen with, I think, a picture of the sky, it's blue with white swirly lines and a little bird.

When booting from the recovery disk, I've just got for the first time a box to choose language and keyboard input. I pressed next and now it's just on that sky screen with the cursor. Doing nothing!

Any help would be appreciated before I bin the thing!!
