windows xp desktop problem

my windows desktop is not working properly, when i see a pic i want as my desktop i do the usual right click save as back ground, but it wont save it anymore, instead the image is only seen when i log into my windows when opening up my laptop. then when windows loads up my desktop is white, ive tried going into the desktop settings and under background its grayed out so i cant change or select anything?

any ideas?

im the only user on the computer, i did have another profile on there but mine is the only one used, you have to enter a password to log on
