The company next door to where I work has no security on their wireless network, even worse is the fact that 4 years ago they used to be part of the same company as us and they haven't changed admin passwords on their systems since then!

hehe that would be fun :)

i mean ok you can have no encription but atleast restrict the connections to only known mac addresses

lol loads of ppl have no security on there wireless. My grandad goes away once every three months for two weeks and i stop down his place for him. The next door neighbours have no security so i just connect to there router for the two weeks im down there lmfao.

i get on an unprotected network every night with my laptop. must be a neighbour or something. its very weak but still if i sit in the right place it works!! i dont think they have a download limit either but if they do their bill is probably huge!!! lol!!

Its suprising how many people have unsecured networks, iv picked up loads before.

My mate set his laptop software scanning for unprotected network on his way to work and back and picked up around 20.

our neighbours is too. he is abit strange so never told him. is it worth having a wep key set up if you only let trusted mac addys?

yes. the encryption does what it says on the tin, it encrypts your data to and from the wireless pc's/routers.

even though you only allow trusted MAC address that wont stop someone sneaking in and picking up your radio waves. if they arent encrypted then your bank details etc can all be collected.

there is a way around all of it but its not simple to do, and its highly unlikely that its going to happen to you.

You do realise it is against the law to use somebody elses wi fi connection whether it i unprotected or not.

I read about some guy last year was fined £500 and given a 12 month conditional discharge for "dishonestly obtaining an electronics communication service", which is covered under the Communications Act 2003.

Hey, if you leave your keys in the car and it gets stolen... your insurance company wont pay out due to your stupidity..

Why should it be any different for wireless ?

It's not. Insurance companies don't pay out for wireless network theft :rasp:

Stealing wireless, stealing a car by using the keys - both are against the law..

There's something about wireless theft - dunno.. but it's not legal :rasp:

Mines not protected, basically because the belkin routers are so fragile that once I got it working I couldnt be arsed to have it fail on me again lol.

oh and I try and nick wifi where ever I am, try and stop me

The difference being is that an amoeba knows not to leave the keys in his/her car. For those who don't give a flying monkey's about PCs, setting up wireless is far from easy.

Those 3-page Easy Start start guides that come with the wireless kits, make me piss. It's only when you print off the 92-page pdf user guide on the driver CD do you realise the amount of work you have to do. ;)

Yep, WEP's a piece of urine to crack. Unfortunately, some of the older wireless kit only supports WEP - even if it is in 128-bit. WPA-PSK is easy to use and pretty good.

my router only supports wep. chances of anyone round here trying to hack in are seriously slim though
