would you still buy a sport if they had a small engine?

I m rollin a 172 ff - and I ve had a 1.2 16v dynamique which I loved. I d probably bought a 1.6 with 110 bhp - I think that is a bargain sport.

I like clio as it is true wild card and it so small and nimble to hack people off in traffic too!!

If I d bought a 1.6, though, I d have bought an R6 bike aswell.

I would simply because im 17 and havin a car that looks nice but cheaper insurance appeals to me. As I've never had the chance to drive quicker or better handling cars looks do matter to me.

to be honest tho my wee 1200 because of its handling has just enough power for me to have plenty fun, more power would be a bonus but on a backroad you dont really need much more than 100bhp if the car handles and is nice and light

Nope .I bought mine for the power , handling and yeah looks before anybody says anything . I would never buy a car purely because of the power or its handling abilities if it looked totally crap . Thats why you won't find my arse behind the wheel of a 197 , i coudln't give a s**t if it handles slightly better or can outbrake my 182 , it looks crap .

it doesnt have a lot of power but i can assure you that with a couple of mods and still with the standard power its much more fun to drive than a 172, as im sure fred will back me up on this one too since he said his was more fun than his V6 in another post!!

I'm surprised to read that. The 1.1 that I drove was a horrid jelly mess compared to my 182, and took an hour to reach any kind of speed. It was standard though of course.

high millage ones tend to be noticeably better than new ones. sort out the suspension, powerflex bushes all round, better brakes and good tyres and they are brilliant fun and will out handle a 172 down a backroad which makes them very very fun cars to drive, obviously the same goes for a 1.4, 1.6 and a 2.0, same mods on a 172 will give you a car that handles just the same as the modded 1.2 but with twice the power

A car with no power is never fun ever (for me), it could handle like an Lotus elise and I still wouldn't like it, I need speed. (This is just my opinion).


The engine was the only reason I bought my clio. Feels slow now though :dapprove:

Probably an 8v 1.2 you drove. The difference between the 8v and the 16v 1.2's is as pronounced as the difference between Vanessa Feltz and Paris Hilton.
I drove an 8v belonging to a friend and on the local bypass it struggles to get 85. My 16v will do 105 on the same bit of road.

The problem with a small engine nowadays is always going to be the weight of the car. Back when you didn't need airbags and the like I had a MK1 Rallye. Probably the most fun you could have with a 1.3, and because it was made out of tinfoil was pretty damn quick. I loved it.
The new Twingo looks like it could be fun if it is light enough.

YUP!!! and my 1.2 on apex kit felt miles more planted than a 172, Twisty road, my 'fettled with' 1.2 would have kept up / pulled a 172 if i was driving both........ very different type of Fun, but my 1.2 was a cracker on a twisty road.....i miss it at times. It only shown its limitations when you pushed beyond the levels of grip........then everything became very vague lol!!!

Handling is better than power for me, but then again, its what i have always known......

couldnt agree more.........my workmate has a 1.3 rallye......no rear seats.........QUICK and corners for fun!

And im with you on the twingo too.........that looks a right laugh to me!

What does it matter that a messed with 1.2 handles better than a standard 172? A Go-Kart handles better than my 182. So what? I'm not saying the 1.2s can't be fun, but apples for apples, the quicker car on the same setup will always be more fun (up to a point where the chassis can't handle the power)

That's just my opinion though, so on to the original titular question. I bought my 182Cup having never driven one, but it wasn't based on looks. Rather, my choice was based on countless road tests proclaiming its greatness, and the extreme value for money. It just so happens I also love the looks. I don't spend 6 hours a week cleaning it. In fact, right now its utterly filthy and I like it that way because I prefer to drive it how it was intended rather than spend every weekend rubbing carnuba wax and micro pro-vitamins into the paint using silk gloves spun from the arse of Tibetan spiders.
