Would You Trust Your Clio...

  RB 182
..on a Continental road trip?

Have the Eurostar booked for Sept 13th, and hope to end up in Barcelona via France and Northern Italy.

Now we were all set to go in my 2002 82k mile 172, but the g/f has just bought a 40k Mini Cooper S with the full glass roof among loads of other options.

1stly, which do you think would be most economical over the whole trip, the supercharged MINI or my n/a Clio? And which would you trust for the trip. Theres pro's and con's for both cars atm!

Yes. I have taken mine to Le mans. I want to drive it to spain. Over the Pyrenees. I have done this in a citreon sara piccaso.

  mk2 1.2 16v
yup, i'd trust mine enough to go for it :approve: ...although having said that i'd still trust a new mini more tbh

depends how many of you are travelling and how much you're taking with you, clio is more spacious in the back and has a bigger boot does it not?

Just do all the major checks before you go top every thing up and you will be fine.

  RB 200 Cup!
of course - once i get a 197 in couple of years im off to the Ring

mind you id have gone abroad in my 8 year old ph1 - never missed a beat

  V6 255, 172's, JCW,
Took my V6 across from Northern France, down to Monaco, back up through Switzerland, back over to the West coast of France and back to Portsmouth last year.. no problem! well, except a coil pack going that I replaced myself in Nice lol.
Have had a 172 and a 182 before, no problems!
Even if there was, what better country to break down in a Renault Sport!

  20VT Clio & 9-5 HOT
I always take the Honda when I need to be sure my car is not going to break, or it is an important trip lol!

  172 Cup
it most certainly does have a bigger boot, i used to have a mini and i couldnt even get one set of Golf clubs in the boot, i had to fold down half the back seat!

  Ph1 172 + Combo van
the minis have run flat tyres which means they are twitchy and you are always correcting the steering so on the motorway it would be a pain imo.
just make sure your clio is serviced and you take appropriate fluids to keep your car going. the boot is tiny in the mini too!

the boots are shite on them, my mums got a cooper S, fuk all room in the boot! she only goes shopping in it lol

  RB 182
Just two of us going, so boot space isnt needed really. One big factor is the Clio has a spare, whereas the MINI is on runflats - no good in a blowout. The MINI has a full glass sunroof (good for when the sun comes out) and aircon but the Clio only has aircon, and they both have xenons.

Is the Clio going to be more economical though, as im getting 34mpg town driving and so is the Cooper S

I'd say use your own judgement, after a year i trust my car enough to the point where i'd drive it abroad, clio's dont usually break down they just have poor build quality. Where as the mini does neither, i'd take the clio though just a gut feeling it would be better.
