BMW 335d X drive M Sport

BMW are weird...Why they insist on creating these models that effectively show up the ///M brands is beyond me! The new M3 is going to have to be seriously good to top this as an all rounder! HoHum!

My sentiments exactly, Ali. Miss a gear change and you're going to see the diesel's rear lights!

It is an odd one. I bet this isn't too far off an E90 M3 on the road. I can only assume the new M3 will be a fair bit quicker.

Its also the first time that the range topping power output of an none ///M has come from a Diesel. 335i = 306bhp. 335d = 313bhp.

But people want the noise and drama etc, the looks of an M3, it's still flagship. I don't think power and pace are the be all and end all hence them having an awesome Diesel range! Epic bus!

With 4WD and mid 4's to 60. 9/10 you'll beat the M3, except maybe on one hot/dry day a year we get. Does seem odd to me!

That ZF box is the new cars is supreme for an Auto!

If the F10 M5 is anything to go by in comparison to the E60 M5 then Im sure the new M3 will be a cracker.

I'm surprised they didn't lift the 335i to ~330hp just to put it slightly in front.. The output of it hasn't budged since the E90, whereas the 335d has gained around 30hp.

There isn't really a good reason to get the 335i unless you really hate diesels, really want a petrol, or want rwd...

They've not updated that engine for ages really. Could have given it the 135i headline figure of 315bhp though. The 330d and the 335d and the 550d engines have all had the new style turbos fitted though.

Maybe they've just given up on it.. Not worth the investment. Although they are really popular in the US.

Unfortunately (because I love petrols) the diesels make most sense over here.

So why would you go for the i over the d? Apart from the obvious fuel difference, surely the 335d is the better car all round?

If you do low miles and intend to keep it a long time the i makes sense I guess, as the petrol repair bills long term are lower generally.

Some people demand RWD and hate diesel.

What is the weight difference, by adding the X drive? And is it "smart" system like Quattro or permanent?

Around 100kg.

60:40 split biased to the rear normally. Can go to 90:10 either way.

Mainly because some people still want a petrol...

I had an E90 335d, it sounded ok for a diesel but not a patch on a petrol. Matters to some.

In terms of refinement, petrol still has an advantage. If the money doesn't matter, petrol engines are more enjoyable.

I dont think it does, the modern diesel BMW engines are super refined to drive and the fact you dont need to rev them makes them feel even more so.

Bar the tiny rattle on start up, if you didn't have a rev counter you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between a 335i and a 335d now.

The huge surge of torque gives it away on the D in my opinion, the petrol cant compete with that.

Could the op or anyone else explain this to me please. My mate has the 335d and it is imo a quick car. However it doesn't feel as quick as you would expect, given the amount of torque it has. I was lead to believe that the more torque you have, the more you feel the acceleration. His doesn't exactly wrap your cheeks around the headrest if you get me... any ideas?

Depends how you drive it.

In gear has a lot of pull.

Pin in it and use all the rev range and it doesn't actually feel quick, but it is. With the new ZF auto it just feels like it's one long gear.

It probably hasnt been remapped yet, they arent quite as torquey until you do that.

Ok thanks. Congrats on the car fella, awesome machines!

It's an awesome car but let's not go pretending it's an M3 killer. I'm sure it's fantastic to drive, but it's not likely to steal sales from the new M3. They aren't aimed at the same buyer for starters. I think we can assume BMW know what they're doing.

Sorry forgot to say it is still standard with 430 ft/lbs of torque. Would you expect that kind of torque to pull very hard?

It does pull hard but they are geared quite tall, they are very heavy, and being so smooth its easy to miss quite how quick they are going anyway TBH unless you stare at the speedo.

Depends what you are comparing them too, next to my turbo clio they may as well be a pushbike, but compared to a normal 172 they are quicker and for such a heavy comfortable car that does such good economy thats impressive IMHO.

I am in no way knocking them as I love my mates car and love the op's new car, I just expected to feel the torque more. They kind of waft you down the road and it seems effortless. Yeah on a run you can see over 50mpg. Crazy.

Its fast for a fairly heavy and nicely refined diesel saloon, its not sports car fast though, so I guess its just a case of what your expectations are.

The waft is the hidden gem. You're doing 3 figures before you put the radio on. The Clio shakes at 70mph.

It's not supposed to thrill, it's got a heated steering wheel FFS!

I was just jesting.

No harm done!

It has some pace of an M car but it's a long way from one.
