So it's basically a PSP which you can plug into the TV?

Basically it's a tablet, thats a PSP that you can plug into the TV.

Be interested to know how long it can last in portable mode

How long can your phone/tablet last playing games??

It'll be running the same chipset and using the same type of batteries.

Yea, it'll be up against stuff like Nvidia Shield.
(There are rumours it's basically the Shield K1 with a new processor shoved in it)

If those little controller things have extra battery packs in them that'd be pretty good.

You've got to assume they do, they are wireless after all.
But will they just leech power from the main unit, or also act as 'auxiliary power' when connected to it?

Hopefully act as a power booster.

Otherwise you'll be lucky to get more than a few hours life out of the thing before it needs charging again, thats if it doesn't overheat and shutdown first.

I think it's a cool idea - taps into the Japanese love of mobile gaming and the Western preference for home consoles. Best of both worlds!
They just need to make some more games for it and encourage third party support...

Never been a massive Nintendo fan other than MarioKart & Goldeneye. It does look quite neat though, I might pick one up.

Looks a bit gimmicky. People already carry their big phones around everywhere, their Ipads/Tablets/Laptops... might be a bit much to cart this around too. Even applies to the kids who its generally aimed at.

Oh joy another f*cking daft console. All three (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) have new versions with bugger all decent games for them?! Just remastered versions of old games is the best PlayStation has to offer at the moment. Terrible effort. The catchphrase " this is for the players " is laughable tbh. Appalling examples include dying light, star wars battlefront....endless bloody battlefield, cod and assassin creed pieces of s**t mixed with one decent game here and there such as uncharted. Having to pay psn for so called "free" games....sodding indie games apparently? Shite.... Fez, flame over, ether one, entwined, gone home, galak-z to name a few. Old megadrive games are more fun than these pieces of s**t. Rant over.

As always, I have made a video explaining EVERYTHING you need to know about the Nintendo Switch!!

Enjoy!!

I wasn't sold and the I saw skyrim so I'm in.... if the games are everything other than Mario, sonic and zelda it may well be a winner

It will be let down by Nintendo's lack of quality games outside a few titles.

Probably sell like hotcakes in Asia though, they love portable games consoles.

At the end of the day, the games are everything.

Also, I hate Nintendo for their unrelenting prosecution of even the most tiny insignificant acts of copyright infringement. You could upload a 1 hour documentary, but if it featured a few seconds of someone playing Zelda they'll have it down instantly.

They're like the Nazi party, but they make video games.

They'll probably come here and request CS Admin edit my post.

Looks good, im tempted. Doubt I ever would take it out like in that video.

In real life that person would be mugged and the device taken ha.

I also cannot see two separate small hand controls being comfy, thought maybe they would join together and make a controller but doesn't seem it.

They do join together (see my video above for details and pics)

Massively disappointed and underwhelmed by this 😧 I was hoping for a return to form from Nintendo but I can't see it happening.

What did you expect/want from them, just out of curiosity?

I don't think they can do much that isn't already done. IMO

I was hoping for a significantly improved (more powerful) underlying hardware so that it would be able to compete at a similar level to the PS4 and Xbox One, thus opening the platform up to potentially more developers and more opportunities for big AAA games to be released across all the major platforms. It's relatively straightforward (at least compared to recent years) to take a PS4 or Xbox One game (or PC) and rework it for the other platform, but it's a major ball-ache when trying to realise that same game on something such as the Wii-U (which is why it didn't happen, ignoring the fact that Nintendo have never been particularly accommodating or welcoming to third party developers). Seeing as the Switch is not really offering much more than the Wii-U in terms of hardware performance then it's certainly not going to be able to compete with the Xbox One and PS4. That's fine, I get that it's the Nintendo way but it also means a lot of developers and games we have enjoyed on other platforms are not going to be making an appearance on the Switch. But that's ok, there will always be endless Mario Kart racing games and Smash Bros. first party games to play. Again

I do like the flexibility of the modular design and the 'lifestyle' vision surrounding it but - lets be honest - how many folks will really use it like that? How many of your mates will bring their Switch'es to a BBQ or your rooftop party? It's great if you want to cary on gaming whilst you go for a dump though! I'll no doubt end up buying one as I collect consoles anyway; but it will end up at the back of the cupboard with the Wii and Wii-U collecting dust. I get more use out of my N64 and GameCube to be honest!

I genuinely hope Nintendo pull it off though. I am a fan and I cut my teeth in the games industry writing games on the Nintendo64 (hence have a bit of a soft spot for them). However, they are such a pain in the ass to work with / develop for and very selective about what gets released on their hardware. They need to entice and bring developers in, to perhaps be a little more flexible to western developers, maybe take a few more risks. I'm just not sure that their forthcoming Switch (and their vision) will permit that.

As per usual Nintendo aren't releasing a console to go head to head with Sony and Microsoft, they're creating their own market, their own niche, their own audience. They'll probably sell the console in the masses, especially parents buying for the children and make a huge amount of money. But apart from the pick up and go, what else does it have to offer? As SharkyUK said the graphics and performance is no more different than the WiiU.

I just wish they'd drop the gimmicks and go back to doing what Nintendo do best, making great games. But, money aye.

You do think that if Nintendo didn't have the games like Mario, Zelda etc that are Nintendo only they would be bust a very long time ago.

  Listerine & Poledo
If all Nintendo did was release another Gamecube, then no-one would be bothered with it, they'd sitick to XBox and PlayStation.
It's clearly not for everyone, but neither is intelligence

I find the cartridge thing they're doing abit odd, I don't know why they couldn't use USB sticks or something more generic and widely available.
It's abit of a cool retro nod, but I can't help thinking it's just useless crap that will push up the price of the console for little benefit.

piracy evasion.

Is it really that bad these days?
Enough to go to the cost and hassle of developing and then using these cartridges?

Maybe they're just easier for kids to handle?
possibly that too, good point.

But yes, piracy is still a thing. Just look at any thread on CS about how people will avoid paying for Sky / BT / TV License and will instead just hook onto a Thai broadcast through their [whatever little web streaming App]. Paying for content is, seemingly to many, a worst-case scenario.

But, if you can only make the content useable by having it as part of an elaborately designed cartridge, then that bypasses that issue quite nicely.
As for cartridge development. Once it's designed, it's done. All you do is add a different slice of solid state memory in it depending on what game you are putting out.

And yes, it also means that you can't get 400,000 indie devs. knocking together any old shonk and banging it out to market.

All that said, give it 3 months and you'll be able to 3D print a cartridge casing with an SD Card slot in the top.

You'll likely be able to buy blank cartridges and equitment to load games onto within a month of it being released. Look at the DS, they don't even try to hide it.

Well from the press release it looks like you can download games off internet as well.
So how long is it going to be before someone has some little patch software and a vast library of games you can download off t'internet for nowt???

Totally bypassing all the stupid cartridge nonsense.

Digital Rights Management is a thing.

Alternatively, people could just pay for things? Or, you know, not have them.

I've been following news and watching gameplay on the Switch for a fair few months now. I'm massively tempted!

Anyone going for one/got one today? Mario Kart looks incredible.

Ours is being delivered today along with Zelda. I can never resist a new console. It's a shame there are only 2 release titles though, that's really poor!

Picked up the one with grey controllers at a midnight launch, and picking one up wit coloured controllers in a couple of hours.

I didn't know which to get, so pre ordered both! Still don't know which one I want!

Noticed that if you buy the coloured joy cons seperwtely you get the opposites of what's provided with the coloured joy Con console - meaning you can have all red or all blue.

I still can't decide what I want - must say the grey looks less like a "toy" and more sleek! Help me! Lol
