Dealer wants deposit before mot or test drive?

Car  Clio eunos clubman s
Hi guys this is my first post  I'm looking at buying a 172/182 and have seen a few now looking around £1k-£1.5k Ino to check belts dephaser vvt etc but I've found one I like £1200 but dealer wants a deposit before he mots or lets me test drive. Should I trust this he does say he will give it back once tested just seams strange?.

I understand why he might want a deposit before M.O.T'ing (if the sale was confirmed), but not sure how he can expect a deposit before a test drive..

Thanks Matt yeah that's what I find weird but he said I can't test drive even with trade plates as he will get closed down, and I said it's abit hard to buy a car without a mot and without a test drive even with proof of service etc he seamed a nice lad but it's abit strange.

Personally wouldn't be an issue on me (depending on the value of the deposit he's talking).

Become a full member (£12) and look in ClioSport's classified section. Always plenty.

Good point mcdriftin I thought that as I am youngish 24 but I turned up in my cooper s and spoke to him about my mx5 turbo

Lol at mace XD he did say I'll give you three months warranty but doesn't cover track use lol I want it as a daily that's all,

Typhoon what if I go test it though and vvt fails or brakes are done or something and refuses to give me cash back and 10% I think he wants.

It may well be then that he's had a few test drivers, and got fed up with it, but the fact he's saying you aren't allowed to test drive it even with test plates, if true, would not change even if you had left a deposit, so I'm not sure why he'd say that unless he just isn't comfortable with you driving it.

If you're getting bad thoughts about the process (rightly so) before you've even test driven the car then take it as a gut instinct and walk away. There are plenty available for your budget, I don't think this one will be anything special.

Is it on their website? If so, link it please.

Yeah mcdrifting I think you might be right I'm going to try hold off I think I said can u not mot it and I'll come test drive it that day and leave deposit I'm travelling an hour to view so clearly not a messer :/ yeah I'm going to try that budgie I think love the avatar btw XD

Thanks typhoon i will copy and paste the link, and Dave dreads that's what I think also it had a club sport sticker on window so maybe u guys will know it.

It does in the flesh too imprezaworks there's a couple more things like there screws missing on the inlet woried they may off fallen in when removed, and the service history is receipts for parts as was his cousins car and he did it himself. Like I say the guy seams sound just want ppls point of view before I commit to something that might be a bad idea :)

Not every (upper) inlet hole has a bolt btw.

It's been out of MOT since last July and has only done 5k miles since July 2015, seems odd.

When were the belts done and who by?

They were done by his cousin aperntly he has receipts but don't specify what car, only mileage and can't see a stamp. And oh you might be right davvy then there was two holes in the middle next to the other bolts because the had a thread I thought they must be missing,

Bloke yeah it does seem like that I'm going to see what everyone says and see if I can find any others but I'll defo consider your offer pal have u had a few? :)

absolute bollox!!! if a car doesn't have mot it has to be in a roadworthy condition. plus it says in the ad that it's got mot.

does look ok though, if you're seriously interested in it bung me £20 and i'll go and give it a proper going over for you.

10000000000000000% do that

Carl looks after my car and I have OCD. Be the best 20 you will ever ever spend when looking for a car

Cheers imprezworks and Carl that's really good to know :) thanks this forum is actually great didn't expect such good responses :)

High miler too. I'd seriously consider looking in the classifieds on here - you'll also be able to see car history from previous owners as mentioned.

James Bryan it's down the side of subway near motorway, great I think from what your all saying I should ask him to look :) do I have to pay the £12 to see what is available on here :)?

Cheers typhoon I'll try look on classifieds on here
It's all members only mate. Well worth it though. Not only the classified but you'll get access to all the guides (for when you do purchase one), member kit, cheaper insurance from people who specialise in these cars, cheaper labour at certain garages, etc etc.

Tell them to go f**k themselves, I got a lower mileage 182FF for only a few hundred quid more, plenty of others out there and some bargains as well. Pay the £12 and wait for a decent one to come up on here...
