Jekyll's RB182 Progress Thread

Had a few issues this weekend.....

So my plan was to fit my front bearings. Had a browse on the forum and on youtube and thought i'd give it a go as id never done it one one of these before. Turned out it could have gone better! This was all over the space of the weekend, not all in one hit.

Got the car in work friday evening after i finished work. Jacked the car up and removed the wheels. Nice to see the coilover covers still doing there job properly :smile:

Then i started the process of removing the drivers side hub.

Not really thinking, i tried to remove the ABS sensor from the hub. Of course naturally, it broke as it was seized as to be expected. If i'd thought about it i should of just unplugged it from the loom and left it in but at this point i decided it would be a perfect time to sandblast and paint the hubs and properly clean them up and just buy new sensors.

The bearing race on the flange had seized on. Cue the grinder, being careful not to score the sleeve.

Removing the seized circlips that was buried under rust was annoying, but got there in the end.

As you can see they looked worse for wear so it was definitely the right decision to freshen them up. All sandblasted, new bearings greased up and fitted and the hub/flange painted black.

Then it was refitted to the driveshaft and everything was copper greased before refitting. With this done it was perfect time for some food and drink!

With all going well i set myself up for the passenger side....

So i started to remove parts for the hub removal. I had left the components soak in 3in1 penetrating spray while the other side was being done. As the parts had not long been changed, everything still had plenty off copper grease from the previous fitting. Track rod outer, ball joint, hub nut and shock bolts all came undone piss easy. Happy days. This is where it turned.... The hub was seized on the driveshaft spline. As i pulled and pushed the hub, i popped out the driveshaft.

I tried popping it back in but had no luck! Turned out the rubber had popped off which still had the circlip attached as you can see here.

Seen as i was pretty fucked off with that, i had 5 mins out and then carried on removing the hub with a copper/hide mallet. A few swings and it was removed. The driveshaft was left leaving more oil.

Next up was to remove the disc retaining screws. One came off with a small fight, the other put up a bigger one.

Hammer, chisel and drilling and it was removed.

Next was the disc itself. Turned out that was seized on the hub lip. Cue some more beating with a rubber mallet and more penetrating oil and it finally came off. (I was worried at this point that it would crack but thankfully it didnt)

I removed the ABS sensor and had the same issue with the bearing race on the flange once it was separated from the hub.

As you can see, they was fairly manky/rusty.

At this point i cracked on and removed the old bearings fully and the circlips, then proceeded to sand them, fit new bearings and painted them black, just like the other side.

After a phone call regarding the driveshaft to @AlexW i knew what i had to do. Unfortunately it was getting late on sat evening at this point so i decided to call it. Sometimes thing are better after a good nights sleep.

We had no gearbox oil at work so a trip to Halfords in the morning and this was purchased as Alex said he prefered this grade. I take he's experience into hand. This was all they had (In fact this grade was the only grade they had 3 litres in)

All ready for refitting. The butterfly seal plug was a pig to remove (what should i expect!) but i eventually got it off. Found some garden hose for the filling pipe also!

Wowzers, that was a weekend and a half!! Respect for keeping stopping to take the progress pics Mark, most would be like 'i'm just getting this **** of a job done now!!' haha. Looks a right mission, but so worth it, looks awesome now... nice and fresh :cool:

I'm glad it's all done now. As i said to emily and a few guys at work, yes it's taken me longer than someone who's done it but I've now done it and glad I did. I like to have a go at things if I'm semi confident. I'm not a mechanic mind.

I mean, If I'd let a garage do it, they would of given me an unexpected call to say it needs sensors, etc. Also, the discs probably would have broken in a garages hand as they probably take less care. At least this way, I know how it all happened. Plus I got the chance to clean up all the parts properly.

Ordered some new ABS sensors today. Found a company on eBay selling them quite cheap and these are compatible with esp and have female ends which mine was.

I also have been speaking to @imprezaworks and @STEVE.M about J&R driveshafts and seen as renault don't sell the passenger side, ive taken the punt and ordered one. Will be here tomorrow apparently. Cost £50. This way, everything will have been changed up front.

Good effort fighting through the problems Mark. The gf could have scrubbed the wheels in between cuppas. Something to remember for the next job!

Those covers have worked wonders on the bilsteins! Shame how bad the bottoms have got like but at least you've still loads of adjustments should you need it [emoji108]

Tell me about it. Winter and white wheels don't match. The problem is I work on a farm and the drive in and out is always mucky if it's been wet.

These are set now and chances are they won't be adjusted. Unfortunately I think it's inevitable unless the struts are fully coated/powder coated. My old BC's were coated and always stayed clean/gloss black.

Takes 3.1L but you'll never get it all out so 3L suffices.

Mine doesn't mind this. She actually enjoys it. Certainly prefers this over my old ph1 but that was more raw. This seems easier to drive she said.

It's like a daily driver having a gradual nut and bolt resto.

You definitely have more patience than me when working on cars, although having your work to use must help!

I love those jobs that take 10x longer than they're meant to! I'm doing the engine swap on mine at the minute, every other bolt is snapping or seized... it's great.

Just a note on the hubs, you should never paint the face that the brake disc mounts too - you'll likely find that you'll get a wheel wobble later down the line, if you do then whip the discs off and clean those surfaces up :up:

Sometimes it's just easier to change parts, if other parts connected to it are being removed.

Car has done 113k now and being a daily, it needs to be working. I can borrow my missus car but, always nice to have both cars working!

Having the workshop does help. Thankfully we can be there anytime and all through the night. After working hours of course. Downfall is that it's nearly 20 miles away from home, hence me leaving it there overnight for 2 nights and getting my missus to taxi me to and from work.

What a weekend of fun :smile:

I wouldn't say fun @Martin. The pizza, sweets and beer was the only fun part!

I did paint the face of the flange very thinly. As you can see, there's brush marks on how thin it is. But if I do get wobble, then I will sand it off.

Can't turn back once I'd started mate! It would be a different story if I didn't have the facilities at work.

Got the new driveshaft turned up from J&R today. Quick delivery considering I only ordered it yesterday.

Comes with the bigger ABS ring too which is cool.

I did notice it's slightly different to my old/current one. The one I have has a coupling over a rubber that's halfway down. Can anybody clarify what this section is? Have they sent me a wrong one?

I was told it's a center bearing to help support the shaft? Normally get them with longer shafts?

Hopefully someone can clarify before I send it back, as it would be nice to fit both the driveshafts this weekend?
 
I've got a center bearing on my offside shaft. I remember zinc coating the bearing bracket LOL. But pretty sure there's nothing on my nearside though. Will have to check as I may be going mad. Alex will know for sure off the top of his head anyway though.

Yeah I think he will. I've sent him a message.

I will be over he's this weekends as he's fitting the other side, plus clutch, so it would be a perfect time to change both shafts.

Took a punt on these as i missed the discount at GSF and wanted them for this weekend so i managed to find a set on ebay that are compatible with esp.

All done. Unfortunately we didnt have time to do all the jobs, due to the photoshoot so we called it there for the day.

All parked up, looking filthy but feeling better! No more clicking on full lock and the clutch feels so much better!

All is not all good though. We noticed that the pinch section on the passenger side hub where the ball joint goes into is a tad slack. This isn't good. Luckily i posted up a wanted thread and @Coops Turbo has a spare cup packed 182 passenger hub which im going to purchase. This means im going to clean (sandblast and paint black) the new hub and try and push out my new bearings that ive just put in. Im hoping that not only the bearings come out easy, but the whole hub removal, etc comes off easy. I think i may purchase another genuine bearing kit from @renaultpartsdirect just in case things dont go to plan. This also means that it'll need to be aligned again! 😧 Stortford Performance must love me!

So jobs that need to be addressed now are:

Get new hub and fit new bearings.
Fit handbrake cables
Fit Thermostat
Refit exhaust trim (Alex pinched mine for the photoshoot!)
Get car aligned.

on another note ive decided on doing 2 things:

Im going to remove the sunstrip. Been thinking about it for a while. @sj2112 :wink: and also removing the rear coilover adjusters to see what it looks like.

Thats it for now i think.
