197s are getting silly cheap?

  Clio F1 197 Cup
Just having a little browse through PH/AT/eBay at 182s to get a feel for current prices and it seems that 197s are approaching silly cheap money?

Saw quite a few cars around the £3/3.5k mark, with 60-70k miles, some with gearbox swaps and a couple of years left on the belts. Seems like these are getting pretty cheap now? I presume this is because most of them will need a lot of money spent getting back to a good standard? And the dreaded potential gearbox issues leaves a big bill in the future perhaps.

What do you all think?

Par for the course really for them. Unless they're R27's with sensible mileage and decent spec, they'll plummet. Very similar to the 1*2's.

The problem with them is as you've said, everything is dearer on them, and due to no one breaking them as much, used parts aren't as available, from what i've seen.

If the gearbox is sound and its had all the work done, i reckon they'd be a decent buy.

That said, if it was 3/4k, you're better in an EP3 Type R.

  Clio 182
I picked up a Clio 200 a month ago with 80k on the clock and belts done last year.
Needed nothing other than a gearbox rebuild which cost me £325.

No one wants them

They're getting cheaper to buy but still are expensive to run and repair for what they are imo. Not a fan of the 200 looks at all. Finding one that's had all the common problems fixed is the way to go as it's a buyers market for these.

Nobody wants a harsh, loud, difficult to drive clio that does 20mpg

The only things they have going for them is looks and handling. I still think they're the best looking renaultsport clio (v6 aside).

But, touch wood, they're fairly reliable cars.

The biggest issue I've had with mine was when it got wrapped around a tow rope at oulton last year. New brake lines, fixed splitter, new crank sensor and plugs* and job was a good un.

*crank sensor fail caused breakdown on track and misfire error came up on the scan. Plugs were due anyway so that wasn't really an issue

Whatever it is,it represents excellent value for money,be it a 1*2 or 197.
If you want a raw hot hatch, you cant go wrong for that money.

Never been in an EP3 but I don't think I would swap my 197 for one, not sure how an EP3 could possible compare to the chassis on the 197 haha.

The 197 (IMO) isn't a very desirable car. It's probably on par with a non cup 172. If I wanted a Mk3 I would only be looking at a 200.
Curious to hear why you say that?

You do make a valid point, especially as I some managed to get down into the low teens for MPG when doing a NC500 run!

Seems like you can get a 182 or 197 for similar money now and I think I would prefer a 197. I wonder how much cheaper they will begin to get.

To be fair, If i was buying a clio again, it'd have to be a yellow 182 or a trophy to stop me buying a decent 197.

Just look at them

  Did have a R27
The problem is people buy them and then can't afford to run them. Hence why most of them are 3-3.5 but I bet they have had some of the more expensive jobs not done.

Those of us that are keeping theirs in tip top condition may profit from when they start to become collectible.

R27, raiders, Silverstone and cup editions will hopefully hold a half decent price in the future.

10 year (or there about) old Clio! I'd say there is nothing unusual in the prices of them. It was/is the same with 1*2's when they were that age. Dogs from 1.5k, good ones 3-4k.
I think they'll drop quicker than the 1*2's too because they don't seem to hold the same cult status/reputation.

I liked my 197 for what it is.

In the grand scheme of things they're just not that fast anymore but still the best looking Clio.

This.
Prices are close enough that no one wants the 197 when they could buy an early 200 for a tad more.

It's a shame they're not a 'proper' special edition clio.
I dunno, they were a 1-year only event.
With all the best bits.

I'd say they're a good sight more special than just turning the boost up on a 5Dr clio and palming it off as "sporty"

Never driven a 200 Cup then. Or a Trophy. Or a Williams.
There's only so many ways you can tell the exact same story

To be fair, it was just a case of 'chuck all the options on and slap on some badges'

No special suspension, no one colour run, no special exhaust, wheels etc etc.

Liquid yellow and stickers aside, there wasn't anything to differentiate it from a fully specced standard car.

At least the trophy was the only red/pink 182 with the Sachs, spoiler and wider turinis so you couldn't spec the same on a regular 182

197 still looks better. ;)

Having a "special edition" that's just a different paint code and some extras is something Mazda have done since '88.

There's an Alibi Blue 197 on the Cliosport Owners Club FB page for for £2.5k that i spotted over the weekend. Can't remember the full specs but the mileage wasn't that high and it seemed in pretty decent condition and well maintained. Had a list of all the work it had done and no mention of it being previously written off or having gearbox issues etc. It appeared to be a good punt for the money. I'm note sure if it's still on there or not.

To be honest, that's going rate for an early 197 now.

It's the cheapest i've seen one going for in decent nic. Well, as far as i could tell anyway, with documented proof of serving, maintenance, repairs etc. The cheapest i've seen before that is about 3.2k with the usual crap and uninformative advert, usually via a generic garage.

r27 was my favourite car I owned out of ph1 172, ph2 172, 172 cup, 182, 182 trophy, 197 r27 and 200 with cup pack. - the 200 would have been it but mine was a heap. yellow R27 with 200 box, rack, and dampers would be perfect for me
