one thing to note with swapping the TCU, and for those that have mapped cars. The TCU is mapped alongside the ECU, mine is now limiting power/torque to 300nm. Ideally once its proven itself I need to get it in for a reflash (hopefully before CSF)
Might be possible to get the map off the old tcu and flash it on. Wonder if mpps or similar would do it

Do the mod for the shorter throw on the paddles now, with the trophy bits. Marginal difference in feel but, mods innit

A little tinkering as always, this may not amount to much but we will see.... So I got hold of a Meg 4 RS 280 twin scroll turbo and manifold. The 1.8 is basically a stroked 1.6 engine from what I can tell.

Anyway the thought process here, twin scroll gives quicker spool and wider spread of power. This turbo on the 1.8 supports 320-330bhp of flow so should do similar on an engine with 180cc less displacement. The turbo I have on there is a little laggy, not massively as the edc gearbox can keep it on the boil nicely once spooled. That said, the fuel system is pretty much tapped out already. Bigger hpfp and injectors would be a nice touch...

Side by side the rear housing is bigger than the Clio item with a bigger turbine, compressor side is not much bigger though the wheel looks like the ones that are fitted to the hybrid clio units.... The 280 turbo runs an electronic wastegate actuator and that runs in reverse of the normal setup, it pulls to open vs an atmospheric with pushes to open. Whipped the arm off and rewelded it 180 degrees around. Going to pop down to Forge Motorsport tomorrow and have them knock me up a custom actuator for it. The Nissan intake adapter fits nicely, though needs a blend on the housing, but it would allow me to mate it up to my current intake setup if I chose to fit it...

Anyway, a bit of waffle and a few pics.

How much you managed to get that for? 🤔🤔🤔

Bored of mine now, needs more power or it's going!

There has been a change to the mapping date, its now sat the 26th, so that means i wont be on track at CSF. not a biggy as id rather not risk it. Will probably shoot over from the track to EFI and back.

It was 32 degrees today, I know lets work on the car........

Long gruelling day with the heat but the bulk of the work is done. I did need to bust out the angle grinder at one point but a decent enough job. Out with the OEM exhaust manifold and hybrid turbo and back in with the Meg 280 RS twin scroll manifold and modified turbo. Meg downpipe even follows the same path as the Clio one and was pretty much a direct fit!

Water lines were easy to sort, OEM Clio oil feed refitted and used to feed the meg turbo, Oil return line was off the Clio and allowed me to use the oem hose. Ill need to make up a boost pipe to join the turbo to my intercooler pipework that I have hacked up previously and I need to add a boost reference port. Few things to tidy up with regards to the recirc valve but I may move that to the meg position or ditch it all together.

All in all a good days graft, and bar a huge oil lek from a failed copper ring its all good.

Mega job mate, interested to see what the 280 turbo setup brings to the table.

Hoping for wider spread of power, also there are off the shelf upgrade turbos available.

Id expect it to still tap out the standard HPFP, so will change that out and see what "fuel" is available on the dyno. Even if the turbo doesn't flow enough for big numbers (circa 320/330bhp on the meg 4?) , we should see more available fuel, and if so, I can hybridise the 280 turbo

All just ideas at the moment, could be a complete bag of shite 🤣

Id expect it to defo outperform the hybrid. Downpipe looks loads better too, all positive improvements.

What a long weekend, drive up to Anglesey for CSF then across to EFI parts for a few hours then back. Well that was the plan...

Anyway this is how it went. Got there and had a little chin wag over what had been done and what I wanted to look at. Chris seemed to like the idea :D and he always likes to play with something slightly out of the box.

Car strapped on and gearbox flashed to remove the limits. Then ran as is to see how it behaved and what it needed. Touched in at 260ish, car was throwing its toys out a little as boost was coming on way faster than it thought it needed so was backing things off. Its a good thing to have in this case as the turbo was trying to come on strong 1500rpm sooner than the hybrid.

Chris started doing his thing and we very quickly got around 280, the hpfp that I had "modified" was giving some odd readings and it was looking like we were blowing the spark out. I Un-modified the hpfp and ran with the Megane fuel actuator and all was good again bar the spark issue. Decided we would whip the plugs out and gap them differently and this is when disaster happened. One ended up on the floor 😭 , on first inspection it looked ok, but once they were gapped a little closer and put back in it was very apparent there was an issue. When removed again we saw the arcing marks..... now the plugs in these are seemingly an odd or new style, and finding a set or even one at a local factors was proving difficult. After some worrying calls a set was found 35/40min away, luckily a friend of Chris's went there for me and got them (y) ex RTOC/R5 GTT guy called Kev(y)

So, Chris had other customers lined up, and I didn't need to rush home, and I had no spark plug so I was happy to wait till they were done to get back on at the end of the day. @Clarkey had his awesome r5 there for a tweak and a 172 track toy was also in. No issue for me as said and then it allowed Chris to have a play without any time constraints.

Plenty of runs and testing done and we wrapped up with similar top end/peak power but gained an absolute shed load of bottom end power and response 😁 car feels like a completely different animal again. I didn't think it was overly laggy before but now its a full on riot to drive. Bags of fuel in reserve, the stock Clio hpfp requests something near 150bar of pressure, the meg one asks for 200bar and can go further. I think Chris requested 175bar of fuel pressure and dialled back the injectors a little. But I'm assured there is a fair chunk left in the bag, this is what I was looking for as it sets me up for the future if/when I push some more.

The meg 280 turbo isn't going to give me more top end, so a slightly bigger comp wheel maybe the next thing to do, but for now ill enjoy it.

In short if you want a genuine 300BHP turbo upgrade on a Clio 4 RS, id be looking at the meg turbo conversion, all the gains of the available bolt on hybrids with none of the losses.

That's a mega improvement with just a standard turbo!

I know someone putting the B series turbos onto the N series engines with resdesigned manifolds, because the twin scroll turbos are spooling far sooner and are way more efficient. Turbo technology hasn't half moved on from a decade ago

It is crazy, chris was staying how the modern stuff loves to boost too. Back in the day, whacking 20psi through some they would grenade themselves. This borg warner is so say happy running 26/28psi if i wanted it

Mid range looks mega compared to the hybrid!
😁 it was dialed in to give the same torque for now. It just has a fair chunk more of it. Im going to go away and see if I can find info what sort of figures the stock rods can take. Cross ref part numbers and such against the megane maybe.

Hopefully it'll give me/us some confidence in pushing it harder. Id be happy to get some where close to 280ftlb at 6500 if i could do so without loosing too much of the bottom end I've just gained.

All that said, I already enjoy it at this level
