Anything to watch for early mk2 172's?

I do apoligise in advance, you must get this everyday lol. I have searched too!

I am looking at downgrading cars to get some money for house deposit.

I am hopefully looking at a 2001 '51' mk2 172 tomorrow. I have looked at 2 2002 '02' 172's and wanted the second one, but someone beat me to the deposit.

Anyway, can someone tell me if there is any difference between the 2001 and 2002 models? As I know they are the first ones about. Or are they identical in every way?

I was just unsure whether there were problems with them being early models.

Many thanks for reading my post, and hope someone doesn't mind answering my question.

only thing to watch out for is the cambelt as said above, all should have been done if your going for an older model

I have a 172 of the same year you refer to.
Apart from cambelt look for FSH
The engine should be lovely at around 60,000 miles nice and loose - mine flys........................

Ok well will make sure the cambelt has been changed. If not, I will get them to do it, as it's at a main dealer.

It's only done 32k, so presume it's been a weekend car.

I have had a 182 before, so kinda know what to look for, just wondered if there was anything specific to the early 172's.

Cheers, well will let you know how it goes, hopefully tomorrow I will have secured it, but we'll see depending on condition.

Going to look at some 172's today aswell - So the early ones have no traction/esp at all, the first batch 52's plates? - got it but it is not switchable? Later cars got it with the switchable system like the 182 has?

Cheers

Rich

If it has a switch it has traction if it doesnt it doesnt. 52 plate on cars should all have traction and cruise as standard earlier cars cruise was an option but I dont think traction was.

My 52 plate 172 doesn't have cruise control:dapprove: but it came with a 6 cd changer as standard.

Yours may have been an early 52 then, 52 plate covers late 02 early 03 cars so it may have been only in 03 built cars. My 02 02 plate 172 came with the CD player but cruise was a cost option and I cant honestly remember if traction was even an option when i was speccing it.

iirc when you turn the ignition on if the esp light illuminates then goes out with the rest of the warning lights its got esp. One the very early ones its present but not switchable.

Cruise control came in around a 53 plate.

Will need the cambelt changed after 72k miles or 5 years.

My car is an 02 so that makes it 5years old now, it has 24k on the clock would you still get the cambelt done or should it be ok?

Get it done mate

I have a 2002 172 with under 20k on the clock but am going to get the belt done later in the year as it gets weaker with age and is more likely to snap.
