Whilst driving home today on the M4 westbound at J45 swansea, in the eastbound outside lane was a 172 CUP TOWING a trailer with a Caterham race car on it, it looked as if he was bloody flying along , one of the most bizarre sights i have seen in a long time:approve:

It must have been the Cup thats pictured in that MOT (VOSA?) news letter for passing non-ABS equipped RS Clios. It has a toe bar fitted - looks very odd

Baldylocks ; I thought that was strange too, they are concerned about a brake balancer and completely missed an illegal towbar ! :S
The Cup shell is the same as the none RS shell and the 172/182 shell its just not type approved to tow but since the cars are the same you can fit a toe bar just like a standard none RS could have. Most polaces don't know and dealers have been known to fit tow bars before now. Its not just a Renault though Skoda VRs is the same but dealers fit tow bars
If you'd be careful you'd have seen there infact two Cups towing Caterham racer out there. both very similar registrations there in the series.

Is the towbar illegal? I know towing is, but fitting a towbar may not be illegal. Some bike racks can be towball mounted, would this be considered a legal use?

It must be close to the MAM for the towing car regardless of the homologation issue.
Not sure I would want an additional 900kgs on the back of a Clio.
