172ff v Golf GTi 1.8 20v turbo (1999)

How fast is the Golf as standard? 150bhp? I cant find any info on them at all. Only seems to be modded info about and what some chav has done after adding 20 ebay resistors etc.

I know someone with one and he smirked after seeing the 172 saying his golf was 20vt and 100% standard as its his wifes car. I admit it looks good, a tad dated and a tad lardy, but I'd have one. A decent one seems about decent 172 money too.

What I'm saying is, will I get pwnt if I try it on?

I don’t think so. Ive had a run with a 2002 GTI anniversary addition (180 bhp I think) and I still beet him, not by much but did.

150 should be easy, think there are about 8.9 to 60

I had a std 150 gti and tbh it wasn't quite as bad as I thought. Build quality was worlds apart even though it was 7 years old...no rattles and a nice 'clunk' when shutting the doors.

The guy who bought it asked if it had been tweaked at all as it seemed to be quicker than the others he tried...but they probably had the usualy RS4 alloys etc.

Best is a few minor mods and you can see big improvments (I think a remap on std turbo can see near 200bhp...put a bigger turbo and the world is your oyster)

Thanks matey. There are so many different golf mks and engines I couldnt be sure I had the right one.

0-60 in 8.5 secs. The 172 should piss all over it.

My friend has had his revo'd originally 150 now 190ish and i still dont have a problem. Heavy car to pull about. Not bad once rolling to be honest!

I went up against an 02 reg golf anniversary edition when I first got my 182 and just managed to pull away from him. A standard GTi shouldn't be too much trouble once your hitting high revs

They suck a$$, those big Golfs. 172 will take it fairly easily.

The thing is they all look pretty much the same from the outside so you don't know what you are up against.

I had a 2.0l gti 115bhp and it was slow as hell. But many of the 1.8t's will easily hit ~200bhp remapped... throw in a few more mods and it becomes a very fast car. Even the TDi's can be very quick if they have been remapped.

Standard the 172 would easly do it.
