  Clio 172 Cup.
Hi All.
Just came across this thread on google. I am planning on sprinting my 172 Cup at Curborough this year so this thread was a great read!. Unfortunately mine has to go in modified road car class as it has uprated suspension (Koni Adjustable's), Induction kit, wheel spacers, strut brace and rear anti roll bar. It wouldnt take much to put back to standard I suppose.

I have been SDCC member for years and often participate in the track afternoons, I have been meaning to enter a sprint for many years and never got round to it, this year i figured the 172 Cup is just sitting there doing nothing so I may as well start!

My first one will be the March 20th club sprint, will enter the championship also when see it advertised.

Any tips or advice greatly appreciated!

Hi Rich, that's good to hear, will hopefully see you at some events this year.

In terms of tips think as long as cars serviced and tyres are in decent condition, you'll still be on list 1A tyres in class 1B so Michelin Pilot Sport 3s are probably best option, or slightly cheaper soft Rainsport 3s. The main thing is get out there and have some fun. I'd build up pace steady (dont try too hard and knock your confidence with a near roll like me 🤣), also watching videos from the quickest guys like ones youll have seen from Rob above helps loads.

Then it's competition against yourself at first before start compare to others in your class. To be honest at Curborough you'll probably get better results in 1B road modified than SC standard. It's a really competitive class SC, there have been races where I've been 4th/5th but my times would have had been 1st/2nd in 1B due to how close the guys in SC are pushing each other.

You'll already know SDCC is really friendly, I was welcomed by all and got loads of advice, other new guys joined last year and helped I'm same way. I can't think of many more fun way to spend a sunny Sunday than hammering your car around a track with likeminded people.

If in 1B and wanted to do anything else to car probably best option would be gripper LSD or quaiffe if still using car daily.

Lots of other folks on here who give great advice too. Oh and a pop up tent or some boxes/canvas for when it randomly 🌧

  Clio 172 Cup.
Great, thanks for the tips.
What about licence, how do I apply for novice race etc licence for sprinting?
I have 2 sets of Turinis - Got new set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on one set. I have a couple of michelin pilot sport 3's on the other set and 2x Toyos on the back. Thinking of putting Yoko Advan V701 on though as my lad as these on his swift sport and they feel very grippy in dry.
Would i be allowed to run 15" clio wheels and 195/50/15 or do they have to be the original 195/45/16's?

Thanks again - appreciate the swift reply!

Yeah in 1B class you can run any size wheels and tyres, however Curborough Championship is list 1A tyres only so check on here... https://www.motorsportuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/196-205-Permitted-Tyres-L.pdf

MSUK Licence is straight forward RS Interclub licence, you can apply online. https://www.motorsportuk.org/competitors/competition-licences/

You've already got SDCC club membership so only other thing you need is to join Curborough Sprint Championship when it appears on website https://www.curborough.co.uk/curborough-championship/

After that on same page there will be entry forms for each race, they're all run by different clubs so each has guidance on how to apply, some online some by post. Get booked in early is another tip as they get over booked.

Also some races have slightly different regulations for example will allow 1B tyres BUT you need to stick to 1A for Championship and Steve Wood who organises it all will sort out scoring if a mix of Championship and non Championship competitors in same class. Also Steve's lovely bloke and happy to chat and advise as well as being bloody quick in an MG!

What are the Yokohama advan v701 like in the wet ? ..I'm looking into tyres at thr moment for my 172 cup and am struggling to get ps3s in 16inch ( can get them for my phase 1 no problem in 15inch ) although Demon tweeks are confident they can get them ..The Curborough championship last Yr was about 70% wet ..although I feels like more ..

I think you can compete without all the safety gear if you run in standard on the new comers regs iirc

Yeah good shout, in SC minimum need helmet now and covered arms and legs but other road going classes need race suit and gloves, then modified need boots and HANS.

My lad thinks they are great on his swift sport, i have driven it and they do handle nice. my one set of clio turini wheels i have uniroyal rainsports on - i have had rainsports for about 20 years on all manner of cars from bmw coupes to astra vxr's and always rated them - nothing beats them in the wet

I forgot to post in here, if anyone is interested, or knows anyone who might be, my car is now for sale...

I think many on here have seen car in person and can vouch for condition, much better than average and values only going one way so priced accordingly as described in advert. I'd give anyone the challenge to find one better and cheaper.

In 6 weeks, if not sold, not an issue, I'll be back in SC 🙂 if does sell I've got some car hunting and prep to do quickly!

I've given it 2 month so price reduced on cliosport by a grand down to £4995. If doesnt go this weekend, I'll take advert down and start modifying for 1B class. Happy either way just wanted to give the chance for a standard full history low owner cup to go to someone to pamper it to keep before I start down this path.

I'm surprised this hasn't sold how clean it is mate, i am sure it will go soon with the new season started. I've kept all the bits to put mine back standard if I need to. Have just invested in a 182 also so have to decide which one to carry on with next season, having great fun in the Cup at Curborough this year though!

Surprised it didn't sell but if you feel like you'll still be competitive in it in the new class then why not build as required. At least you know it's a good base and doesn't need fixing first 👍.

That's it mate. I can only guess collector types want less miles, others want something cheaper so mine was somewhere in the middle.

I already know car top to bottom so aim will be to pick the best £ per second upgrades as allowed in that class.

My shopping list so far after some research.... welcome any thoughts....

PMS shifter 360
BC DS inc top mounts 1040 + alignment
Quaife 1070 + fitting if time
Fibreglass bonnet, boot and spoiler 490
Aerocatches
Race battery 100
Ktec induction 180
MS engineering matched inlets 350
5mm spacers 40
Coolant bottle 30 (all shiny parts add bhp)
Wrap maybe

ASTs would be ideal but some events would not be allowed full coilovers on rear, same on ARBs, same on RCC.

Also 1B tyres allowed some events, so some Braid Fullrace 15x8 might mean bigger rubber and wider track within regs.

Not sure on top mounts acceptable everywhere so need to check regs but to be fair if your not winning no one bothers lol
I would fit gripper diff and coilovers and not bother with fibre glass or shifter and put that towards the difference in price gripper vs quaiffe.
@NorthloopCup is your man for diffs

I've just messaged Mark thanks. Haha yeah I'm not likely to be winning just enjoying myself. I understand as top mounts are integratee part of design of BC coilovers (ie you cant use them without) it gets around that one.

You can argue all day about top mounts although it’s been quiet for a while but the integral part means ‘of the original car’ not the coilovers , but hopefully no one will bother you about it.

Not sure I'd bother with the shifter to be honest. Certainly if only doing sprinting at Curborough etc. I reckon LSD would be good addition though. depending which car I prepare for next year may go that route.

So this happened, I'd taken down all the adverts due to timewasters but left the pistonheads one running at original price as I'm tight and I've paid for it!

A few days ago contacted by someone (turned out to be great buyer) who arranged a viewing, liked the car confirmed was looking at 2 others, comms throughout and came back and said my car was the best condition (others were priced higher) agreed a sale and sent a transport company to collect this morning. Lovely car gone to a good home it'll be sharing a garage with a 2 week old Porsche.

Also I had a friend of a friend interested who just missed out on the guy above. So was right price for right buyer.

Now car hunt begins!

Shame to see it go but proves these are getting popular. I've just bought a 182 also now and am considering putting my Cup back mint and standard for future and prepping the 182 for next years championship.

They sound ace on bodies.
Jp4 was it originally? Or is it all hybridised with the j4 bits?

Grandad spec tow car being picked up Friday 😎 Full Volvo History, fresh MOT and towbar, decent to drive too (not too massive) so will do for camping with kids or boot full of spares for racing.
