172/182 Engine differences?

Car  172 Cup
Just wondering what have Renault done to the 182, to extract the extra 10 psi?

Looking at getting a 172 cup and wonder if there were any engine components that were interchangeable, so that I can match the psi.

Thanks

It's the manifold they got the 10 bhp from, exhaust itself is different too. Get them for about £200 off here mate.

So just to clarify, if you were to buy a 172, and get the 4-2-1 manifold and sports cat (but not the faggy twin exhaust) you'd effectively have a 182(ish), but lighter and thus faster than a 182? in theory?

Yeah that should be the case. I've had both 172 cup and 182 and they seem to put there power down different, more power lower down the rev range but the 182 has more at the top end.

Haha yeah sorry I meant BHP, but it's just the French are always using the other term.
Tyranical that is exactly what I'm getting at, I was thinking it must be a cheap way to get a dcent gain.
So the power delivery will be different, I think I would prefer low down powe, more useful IMHO.

Well I think the power is different due to renault trying to prevent wheel spin so they changed something, could be wrong just my opinion. I thought it could of been something to do with the ESP.

So I am guessing that you prefer the 172 cup to the 182 then Kev?
They have ESP on the 182? Not a fan of the driver aids.

Dunno I like the rawness of the 172 cup but I do love my new 182 cup, alot more grip frond the wider tyres. They feel better built aswell.

Thanks for the welcome cupwizard.

I really like a raw driving experience, but I don't think the girlfriend does :( Looks like I will have to put up with the moaning, or shut her up with a bit of lift off oversteer!

So just to summarise, the only real difference is the manifold and cat? Do many people swap these?

Yeah its a semi popular mod, not that cheap though, most wait until one is being broken. 182's tend to have RS stamped inlets as well, which are less restrictive than 172 ph2 inlets. At our RR day a few months ago, modded 182's made anything from 170-180bhp, the 172's made more like 160-170bhp.

The inlet sounds like a good mod to do, will do some re-search on that one.

Just paid my membership fee, now it's time to get my RS!

Thanks for everyones feedback and advice.

AFAIK it normally only makes about 6bhp more than a 172.

The 172 4-1 exhaust mani normally gets better top power than a 182 4-2-1.

They have RS inlets which are slightly better match to the head.

They have a better flowing cat.

They have a different map.

Just ignore him mate, some people like to pretend to be mods lol. Welcome ;)

How is that pretending to be a mod? The difference between the 172 and 182 is one of the most talked about topics on here, thats what we have a search button for.

Welcome fella, i just htink you need to fine tune your search to find all the answers, though most have been said now

THREAD RESSURECTION :)

A simple question, so apart from the above things like manifolds etc, the bare engine is EXACTLY the same as the 172? i.e. would fit in place of a knackered 172 engine, using all the 172 ancillaries/exhaust/manifold/mounts etc?

The engine are pretty much identical, like its been said its only the exhaust manifold which is different, so for your answer a 182 engine would drop into a 172 and vice versa, please anyone correct me if im wrong

If PSi is BHP, Where exactly had 172 BHP been measured...At the fly or wheels as none of them make 172 do they??

Mine made 172.9 at powerstation, but i think he had the calculation set up wrong on the rollers.

PS or Pferdestärke is a german method of measuring power 1ps= 0.986bhp. Now dropped in favour of Kilowatt. For instance the Fabia is 130bhp which is 96kw. No doubt in the future power will go back to being measured in bhp. These things go in circles as usual.

But I could use the 172 rocker cover and obviously cams onto the 182 head? And obviously the 172 plenum yes?

Why are the heads actually machined to match the head Danny?

The cam's i've bought are locked into an old Rocker cover.

Wonder what i'll get for it on weigh in? lol
