Bigger Brakes - Lower Insurance?

I was talking to a friend of a friend the other day who has 2.0 Nova turbo (very fast and jokes even though i though it would fall apart) said that when he fitted bigger brakes to it he managed to get his insurance lowered?

Has anyone else managed this or is his chatting s***!??

On my old saxo vts my premium was about £20 cheaper when i rang up for a quote with bigger brakes..

Ok then. How come putting coilovers on and stripping your car doesn't lower your insurance?

Less mass for the brakes to stop and coils will allow the car to handle better and swerve out the way of said old dear. Never happens.

Besides, it's 90% driver awareness nothing to do with how specced your car is. Brakes also add value to the car, again increasing insurance.

As said I'm not 100% but I'd be very suprised if it was true.

depends how the insurance company looks at it.....i supposed if you can 'swerve' better they dont take any notice. But if your overall stopping distance is shorter there is less risk of an accident i guess.

Although you wont save money if you have spend big money on 'savage eye balls coming out their socket' brakes ?

Lol you'd think it'd make sense that it'd go down if you could brake better and stop quicker, but it just means you'll go faster and brake later into corners, as said.

I only upgraded brakes as I knew I'd be taking the Clio on track. Would never want to test out late braking on the road though but luckily modded insurance schemes mean no extra for non-power mods. Any quotes from mainstream companies have always put up premiums for brake mods.

Big Brake kits usualy cost more then the standard shite so it would cost them more to replace like for like. He's talking crap.

I declared painted calipers which looked bigger and it took 800 quid off my insurance.

It's b****cks, bigger brakes will increase the value of the car. Do they ask what spec the tyres are for grip? No.

Insurance companies arn't dumb, they have the same thought we do,

nobody will take a normal car, and put bigger brakes on it just incase you need to do a single emergency stop.

They know people who mod the performance of a car, drive like a hero,
people add brakes because they intend to brake later on their late night hero drives.

Actually saying that.. i did ring up the next day with a new quote with bigger brakes :S Must of been a change somewhere along the lines as prices change all the time on insurance quotes

if you fitted bigger brakes on a track car of course you will be breaking later, doesnt mean the same thing on the road though as you wont be 'racing '. or so it might seem.

your right - though its probably at the discretion of the type of insurance company, bigger brakes doesnt mean you will actually see a speed increase with the engine but does technically mean you can go faster round the corner. Adrian flux and other mod insurers might lower it, but other more mainstream insurers would charge you? difficult one i think

seriously!!!!! big brakes cost like £1000. the car cost say £4000. thats increasing its value to £5000. you really think they will lower the insurance!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nope. You can install brakes from Scenic dCI around 2004. They are bolt on and they use 300mm discs. You can get Scenic caliper almost for free, discs and pads are about same amount of money as original RS. But i dont know what system dou you have in UK for insurance quotes and everything around it.
I raced car on trackday today (whoops, yesterday) and all i can say is that brakes just stops you without any fading no matter what you do. While friend with stock RS182 had problems that everyone could smell. :rasp:

road tyres = my car goes sideways on demand way way way too easily
road legal track tyres = when cold, even i struggle to get it out of shape on the road

which would the insurance bum me for more?

I'm with Sky insurance and i'm 99% sure that my brakes upgrade and eibach sportlines didn't increase the premium, only my induction setup and stainless cat-back did.

I'm sure they didn't lower my premium though.

When i talked to Flux a few years back about 205 gti Mi16 swap, they asked about brake upgrades and said the extra premium for the engine swap would be reduced if the brakes were upgraded

didn't think upgrades made a difference with regards to reducing cost to be honest. Greenlight didn't put my premium up for lines, zorst, and coilovers. :S
