My Cup.

I sold my Black Ph1 to help buy my house and ended up in a Punto HGT, which wasn’t a bad car at all and hardly cost anything to keep on the road. But I did miss my Ph1, it was my third 172 but probably the one I got most attached to.

So when I had settled in the house and got a bit of spare cash I decided to get another 172, didn’t want another Ph1 so set off looking at Cups. I ended up buying the first I looked at. It was on 17’s, had a double barrel Powerflow exhaust, PiperX induction kit, lowered on Apex, splitter was knackered and a front fog light was smashed. But the bodywork was immaculate, had only done 47300 miles, FSH and a recent belt change.

First thing I did was to find another Oz F1 to complete a set I had in the garage and have them refurbed in anthracite.

I fit a Fabia splitter, really can’t go wrong for £11.

One of my rear wheel bearings was shot and the brakes on the back had seen better days, so I decided to replace the discs, bearings and pads. My new next door neighbour works for Mintex so thought I’d give them a go.

I’m going to do the fronts soon and will spend a bit more money on them I think.

The exhaust on it is a cat back Powerflow system and I’m pretty sure it’s in one piece, which isn’t something I’d seen before on a 172. It sounds alright but the tailpipes really let it down.

So I cut them off…

I had this in the garage, it’s not great but thought it would be an improvement.

It wasn’t quite long enough so had to extend it with a bit of aluminium tube.

Cut to length and secured…

It’s not ideal, but I think it’s an improvement and was worth the hour it took to do. It will probably end up having a custom stealth system fitted in the next couple of months.

Had it a month now and have done 1000 miles, so she's on 48300.

I imagine the PiperX with be causing a bit of heat soak, don't worry though I have got a standard airbox and elbow to go on, I could just do with getting some feed sorted before I fit it.

I loved the black Ph1, Like the new car too, Exhaust tip is a great mod, Still would be better with a recessed system...

Nice work though from when bought to now.

A couple of weeks ago she failed her MOT, quite a long list to be fair...

1. Nearside Headlamp aim beam image kick up to the offside.
2. Offside Headlamp aim beam image kick up to the offside
3. Offside rear shock absorber has a serious fluid leak.
4. Rear exhaust system not adequately supported.
5. Service brake efficiency below requirements.
6. Rear (both) brake recording little or no effort.
Brakes Failures: RBT Service Brake Efficiency 48%

First thing was to replace a rear shocker with one off my PH1.

6bc6a858.jpg

At the same time I found the load control valve was a little siezed up, I freed it and covered in WD40. The brakes then passed, going from 48% to 62%.

The exhaust was an easy fix, old socket and cable ties.

The lights were abit strange, it seemed it had been fitted with LHD lighs so for the time being and to get it through it's test I stuck on some "beam benders".

Not too obvious from a distance.

If some cheap headlights crop up then fair enough but if not I'll hold out for Xenons.

So got it through it's test for £5.99.

Why do MOT people continue to fail RS clio's for poor rear braking effort???? Mine failed on this two.... The trouble I had trying to tell him that that's how it was supposed to be.... Jesus Christ.

Well in the end it passed with 62%, I think 50% is a pass. Try freeing up your load control valve and then cover with wd40 whilst moving the lever on the valve up and down, that did the trick with mine. Or you can cable tie the lever in its highest position so that it is giving max effort all the time.

Left hand lights, mint paint and a bias valve......sounds like it may of had a bump at the front and the cup doesnt have the bias valve connected....

I thought that, but the paint depth on the bonnet doesn't indicate a respray and the little black stickers are still there, which are rarely replaced by a bodyshop. It could have spent a couple of years abroad I suppose. That's if they are left hand drive lights, the MOT station said they'd had similiar readings from cheap ebay bulbs. You can check on the back of the lights normally, if DD is ticked then I think they are UK and if DG is ticked they are left handers. Both DD and DG on mine are blank.

I'm not too clued up about the load control valve, I thought it still worked on a cup but just not as effectively as it isn't fixed to the rear axle and that was what the VOSA report was all about? All I know is, freeing the valve up almost doubled the braking effort at the rear.

looking good, nice effort with the exhaust and nice move with the Anth Oz F1's!

:)

Cheers mate.

Have you still got the 16 inch Oz F1's I had refurbed? Was a mistake selling those, the finish was unbelievable!

  Italian 3.2 V6
Yea still have them dude. There actually due another refurb as the missus as bloody kurb'd 2 of them! :( Gutted!! I was thinking polished silver face/rim and the side of the spokes and rim in gloss anth.. i think it will compliment the LY colour really well and match the Std polished Silver bullets also :D

tbh i have thought on chopping them in and getting some anth turini's again :S but i like them as there abit different.

I think they'd look good in anthracite on LY, with some of those Oz carbon fibre centres.

really like the black ph1, lools really good:)

I loved it, but needed to sell. I did think about getting another but don't think it would have been the same.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..

Gave her an oil/filter changer yesterday. Asda are selling Castrol Edge 5-40 for £30 (4l), an extra litre is a tenner.

Bought some Goodyear F1's to replace the Tornado ditch-finders on the front, they are getting a bit scary now the weather has taken a turn for the worse.

Just give your local Skoda dealer a call, they might not have one in stock but will only take a day or so to arrive.

loved the black 172

nice going though on the cup!

Cheers, I miss my black PH1.

Progress on the cup is going quite slow really, buying a house has slowed me down as I seem to spend more time decorating than on the Cup, not good!

3 and a half hours later when it was getting dark it was looking a bit better.

No idea mate, maybe the "PiperX" wasn't doing such a great job as being a filter. Although I do think when I cleaned the throttle body on my last PH2 with 85k on the clock it was in a similar state.

  CLIO 172 CUP....
edd... looks the same as my throttle body befor i gived it a clean..

love the cups tho as i own one my self. you got any more plans for it mate...oh also the exhaust would look better in the bumper had mine done the other week by longlife exhause and it look a 100% better...;)

N00b question. Do you have to remove the TB to clean it

It's a lot easier to clean taking it off, just dis-connect and take out 4 bolts, will take you 5 minutes max to take off.

  CLIO 172 CUP....
yeah as edd saying it so much better doing it this way because you can clean it alot better than if you leave it on...

take 5min to take off also you can see wot your doing.....

at the same time i cleaned my crank sensor and itg panel filter....
