Worrying weather i can afford to run a clio 182 sport

Hi all, I have absolutely fallen in love with the clio sport 182s. I currently own a 1.2 dynamique and currently saving up for a clio sport 182. Im just worrying that i wont be able to afford to run one.


Heres a small list of things worrying me.

• Fuel, How many mpg can you get from them?
• Tyres, Iv been looking at the Michelin exalto pe2 and they seem expensive
• Tyre milage
• Road tax.
• Service costs

If anyone could help me with some of the details or prices i would be highly gratefull.

There are plenty cheaper alternatives to the PE2's that are just as good. Have a look in the tyres section here and see what people are using. I can't help with anything else unfortunately.

Can you afford the insurance?

- 35/40mpg if you treat it nice, mid to high 20's if you've got a heavy foot.
- tyres are ok if you know where to shop. £55 or so for rainsports or Hankook's, both very good.
- tyres, completely dependant on how you drive. I wouldn't say less than 8000 miles though.
- servicing isn't bad at all. Go to specialists, not dealers.

From my experience mpg 32-34mpg combined, motorway run 40+mpg
Tyres i have not changed mine yet and had them on for over 12k look on black circles can get good tyres for less than pe2's but they are the best tyre to buy
Road tax was 235 quid for 12 months is probably on the up i imagine
Service costs very 12k services factor between 120-160 unless you do it yourself and 36k for belts go to a specialist probably 500+ all in depends where you go and if they have offers on

MPG = average between 30 - 33 realistically with mixed driving. I do 60 mile round trip to work, mostly motorway ant 80ish. Although if you are a bit more careful that will go up. On a motorway blast at 70 you could push for 40 i think.

Tyres = you don't have to go for the most expensive. The exaltos are probably the best but if you shop around and look at other brands then you can get them for anywhere between 80 - 130 per tyre.

Tyre mileage = more than you think but completely depends on how you drive, fronts go a lot quicker than rears.

Road tax is a lot think its £235 ish now for 12 months.

Service costs = more thn the 1.2 but if you are sensible and don't go to a Renault dealer and use a trusted specialist (loads on here) then its not too bad at all.

How old are you? Insurance is fairly expensive on them, but again shop around and you can find some pretty good deals.

If you do go for it you will love the car, they are great fun!

Thanks alot for all the replys thats a great help. Im 23 with 2 years no claims and the insurance is quite expensive but iv been shopping around and the insurance wont be a problem. Il have a look at the tyre section aswell thank you that will help me alot . I wont be driving it like some of the young lads iv seen around my area, Im sensible with my car and just want a car with abit more speed and power and considering my 1.2 clio has had no faults for 2 years and i love the car, im really looking forward to buying a clio sport.
How often would you change the belts on a clio sport? Im not clued up on the belts at all sorry

Sensible for asking but if it's going to leave you short or spending a big chunk of your wages on it, don't bother.

A 182 is a nice car but not worth sacrificing everything else for it.

I was 23 when I got my 172, think the insurance cost me £800.

Most 182's will be over 5 years old so should have had the belts done by now. Cambelt change is every 5 years or 72000 miles and costs ~£400 from a Renault Specialist, Renault Dealers are much more expensive.

I averaged 31mpg for mixture of A road and town driving.

Over running your 1.2 a set of tyres will be about £100 more, tax is about £100 more, servicing is similar unless its belts time, but even then its only a one off of £400/5 years.

Then fuel will cost about 20% more than running a 1.2 and thats about it.

From experience, if it is well maintained then it will be more reliable than the 1.2. It doesn't really cost much more to run at all, aslong as you dont do loads of miles and can afford the insurance.

There is a lad who i work with who has just financed a £9000 Ford focus ST over 5 years and paying back £11,500 so i should go for it because i absolutly love the 182 but i just worry to much and need abit of a boost by people who know what there talking about. Considered a ph1 ? I know I'm a ph1 fanboy .. but they look better, they are faster, they are more fun to drive, and there's less of them about. They are cheaper to buy, 15" tyres are cheap as chips and better (insert physics lesson here) ... They also look less like 1.2's than ph2's.

All IMO of course.

Speak to sky who are on here (nothing to do with the tv company), brentcare, and greenlight regarding insurance. Don't even bother going to the generic direct lines etc, unless you fancy a laugh or heart attack.

Lol, lets be realistic! As good as all the 1*2's are on a run you WILL NOT get 50mpg+ "easily" ever, not even in the Ph's 1

And i've seen 47.something on mine but it wasn't what I would call easy by any means. You have to be doing 60-65 over a long distance and really think about how your driving which soon gets boring...

Been realistic though and you easily get 40mpg driving like a normal person...

i think they are rediculously cheap to run considering the performance.

i achieved 43mpg on the motorway the other day and that was without even trying. just sitting at 65-70mph constant. Ive had less than that out of a DERV before lol

It would be more helpful if people posted what they averaged over a whole tank, and not a 30 minute run down a motorway resulting in some wild mpg figure. It's a bloody useless figure. My trip computer says I got 65mpg on the way to work this morning, but that's a far cry from what the car actually averages over an entire tank, and thus the real running cost.

Over 75k in my 1*2's ive averaged about 34mpg. For the performance/fun on offer they are very cheap to run!!

If you swop to 15's, 195/50/15 tyres are about £35 a corner, & if you buy a cup, the cambelt, etc costs about £300.

Only difficulty is insurance if you're a youngster.

If you're worried that you won't afford it, then don't go for it mate, the answer is already there in your mind. Save up for a few more months then go for it when you've the cash there

I average around 27-31 mpg , currently showing 31mpg. I have NEVER averaged anything above 32MPG, but I very rarely drive on the motorway or back roads, so its all town driving. The 5K kick can be a bit addictive to begin with, so to start you'll probably see about 20 MPG lol

SKY insurance were by FAR the cheapest for me, and cannot recommend them enough TBH. Servicing isn't too expensive, just make sure the cambelt / Aux belt has been done. I had a MG ZR Turbo diesel as a run around earlier this year, and the clio wasn't much more expensive to run, easily the cheapest hot hatch fuel wise I think.

This statement worries me a little! Ok financing over a long period keeps the monthly repayments at a percieved manageable amount, but there is a very good chance that you won't want the car for 5 years, then you will either be left with a loan you don't want, or selling the car will barely cover the amount outstanding after depreciation.

Sounds like you will be running this car on a tight budget, I would seriously consider whether it's worth it before buying.

I work mine out properly on my iphone, tank always filled to the top,

over the last 9963 miles i've averaged 31.55MPG

Worst 28.57mpg
apart from one track day 18MPG lol

best 36.48

A much easier reference point is how many miles per tank. Apart from trackdays, I don't think I've ever got much less than 300 per tank. The most I've had is 420 but a lot of that was motorway driving.

I don't think I've ever seen my MPG move from 33.x! It's been sat at 33.8 for the last week or so then during the weekend dropped to 33.4, now back up to 33.6. My old 1.2 averaged at about 41mpg I think, driving the same routes I am now. I get through £40 petrol per week, with a daily commute to the other side of Leeds mon-fri and here there and everywhere during the weekend.

im 21 and had no problem insuring my cup with admiral.. yea they did put my premium up abit but i had come from a R reg 1.2punto...

cambelt will be same as a 172 if you get a cup with the aircon fitted like mine but theres not many around

Well I don't kane it everywhere, but I don't drive like a grandma either. People always think economical driving is slow driving, but it's not. Just being observant so you dont have to slow right down then accelerate off again helps loads, and it probably helps that my car is under a tonne too
