Tumble dryer - Vented or Condenser?

Ours is giving up after 11 years, 2 belts and a few kicks. It seems hardly anyone stocks vented items these days and condensers seem to be "more efficent" on B ratings.

I've read somewhere that condensers don't get the clothes "as dry" or fluffy.

Can anyone who's had both recommend which is best.

Cheers dudes.

So do these heat pumps still dry OK, leave towels fluffy etc?

Honestly in my opinion no, I do prefer how towels out of my parents vented one come out vs the Samsung heat pump we’ve got.

However that things like 20yrs old and probably costs £3 an hour to run.

Can also get vented for £200

I can run my HP dryer all day for less than 1 hour use of vented one.

Seriously the savings are worth the outlay getting a HP dryer.

I went the extra for A+++

I’m now after a tumble dryer as mines squeezing like a pig getting bummed (I’d imagine?)

Are the heat pump actually worth it?

What do people recommend?

Cheers.

Mines be excellent & hardly notice it on the E usage.

We got a samsung heatpump one. It has AI and uses an app. Would recommend
"Samsung Heatpump AI"

If Clothes.Wet = True
Dry.Time ++ 1
End If

A timely thread as our Bosch HP dryer just shat it's power control module, two weeks before the warranty expired. Engineer came out and replaced it today though so hopefully we've got another couple of cheap years drying still in it.

Looked at heat pumps ones when changed ours and couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for a shitty appliance so got a normal condensing one instead for about £250.

A full load to dry uses about a quid of electric. Even if a heat pump one uses 1/2 the power, I’d need to use it around 1100 times to break even. Given it gets used once a week, it would take just over 21 years to break even.

Thems the maths right there

The maths you need ot use to work out if the payback works for you:

The energy ratings are based off 160 cycles a year.

So here is a Bosch heat pump tumble dryer

wth85222gb_energylabel.png

here is a Hoover condensor tumble dryer

hlec10tg_wh_energylabel.png

So the Bosch is roughly 2.8 times more efficient.

Where it gets interesting is your own usage and what rate you pay for a KWH

For sake of ease the current energy cap for a kwh of electricity is 24.5p

So the Bosch machine on 160 cycles would cost £57.82 or about 36.13p per use.

The Hoover machine on 160 cycles is £164.15p or about 102.59p per use

For me I have a heat pump tumble dryer as it gets used about 7 times a week (my Miele tumble dryer actually logs the use. As it stands it is at 364 cycles this year so approx 7.7 a week. We haven't used it yet this week as washing happens sat/sun)

So on the bosch £131.51 a year cost vs hoover at £373.42 a year.

So the payback for me was vastly quicker due to the high use.

Our tumble dryer is making horrible noises, contemplating rather than investigating and fixing it I'm just going to go heat pump. Like you @seb ours is on around 5-7 times a week between September and April and drops to around 2-3 times a week then other months. Payback should be quite quick and hopefully I can pick up a deal this weekend on black Friday

This is my current model:

Compared to my old condensor my payback was like 6 months use. I could'n't believe it when i worked it. I was stunned at how much the old condensor used in electricty.

This all came about when the energy prices spiked a few years ago and I started looking at my home usage and working out what was using the most energy.

Has anyone got a heat pump dryer + washer combo?

Always had seperate vented dryer but considering going down to one for space and cost savings.

Constantly use ours due to a 2 year old, are they as good?

I’d steer clear of combi’s if you have a busy household tbh. It’s a godsend having separates at ours so we can throw a 2nd load of washing in whilst the first lot is being dried.

Fair point. The vented is about 7-8 years old and still going strong, probably costs the earth to run though.
