Its a little over budget but the new 55-250 IS gets great reviews, its not quite as long but it should be sharper and the IS could be of real benefit.

Another reason not to buy a Sony, can't seem to find an official service center for camera gear, should be some contact details around there somewhere though you could try. If they are any where near as good as Canon they should check out...
Isn't it completely the reverse? With exception of the 200 F2 IS/VR Nikon lenses cost a fair amount more, at least the mid range/high end ones do.
Anway, back on track IanFlaherty have you tried playing with any of the camera's?
A 30D went on the Canon Refurb store for 315 notes last...
No but they are both market leaders, think Canon is bigger although its lost a lot of ground recently with Nikon catching up in the digital world. I'd say its pretty split on here, although there are lot of Nikon owners as the entry level Nikon gear is great value for money.
As said go to a...
Thats a nice price for the D60 and I'm sure its a pretty nice piece of kit but just to confuse things and give some more options I'd still rather spend my money on older better technology...
Unless you have babys hands the D80 or Canon 30D should feel much better to use along with all the other...
mmm d700/d3 + Nikon AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, I'd switch systems in an instant.
You'll need the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED not the 17-55 as its a G lens as said.
Well, its Canon latest entry level camera but its just a revamped 350D/400D with a mixture of bits from both. Be better off spending a few more pounds on a 400D or getting it from the right place for less, only thing the 1000D has over it is live view.

Nah, the 18-55 IS can achieve exactly the same thing, infact I think it has the more recent 4-stop IS, the shots were stopped down to around f/13, the £600 comes into play when your at f/2.8 ;)
Yup fo sure!
lol!
ukaskew, IS is quite something isnt it, its my first lens with it, I've suddenly the urge to swamp my 70-200 for the IS version when I get the chance.
djroberts I'm using a 40D which I love but I honestly think a 350D and 18-55 IS kit lens could have achieved similar results.
Thanks!
dk yeah, out of the camera jpeg's are nice, accidentally turned RAW off earlier, only thing done to these is shadow/highlight, very modest contrast and un-sharp mask, can see this really growing on me.
Took my new 17-55 f/2.8 IS out for a quick test down Virgina Waters, the IS works great :D

Always been told to go the other way without blowing anything out of course. Underexposing and correcting in photoshop brings out a lot of noise, going the other way can help reduce it.

Body only? or with the 18-55 IS?
Looks like a very good price http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/
For about 100 notes less you could get a 400D + 18-55 from the Official Canon refurb store. Could buy her a cheap but nice lens like the 50mm f/1.8 with the difference...
You won't see ANY difference between the 400D + D40 IQ wise, especially with web sized images that have seen post processing. The 400D has the better features, auto focus etc but if the Nikon handles better then go with that.
For low light pictures both are going to be pants, having VR/IS kit...
aye, was impressed to see it through the viewfinder! lol I even do the breathing when I'm shooting my camera like COD4! Try & turn on live view at 55mm, zoom to x10 then hit the shutter button and then watch the IS kick in.
Just offloading my first shots, all rubbish, going to blame the rain...
Do like mine when I'm using it, works well with a 1.4TC, use a Kenko Pro with mine.
I think I'd use it more if I had the IS version to be honest, does me well when I need it though. Focus, colours, contrast etc are great..
The White Balance won't have an affect on exposure. If you've got time to mull over a shot its best to use Manual, especially using GND filters. If your sky is blowing out white you need to either lower the ISO, make the aperture smaller or increase the shutter speed or ideally use a stronger...
