Get some Hi-tech GND filters that fit the P-system as the Cokins leave a nasty colour cast.

I'd personally go for a GND 0.6 (2stop) or 0.9 (3stop) soft then add a ND 1.2 (4 stop) if I was wanting to create water...
100-400 is on my list along with a dedicate macro, then I can call it a day but its gotta wait a while! Find my 70-200 is a nice lens but when I put it on I generally want LONG and it just isn't enough even with a 1.4x TC
Budget & lens filter thread size?
You can keep things simple and just get a circular polarizing filter to remove window reflections and preserve a little sky or you can go for the slide on filter route like Cokin, Hi-tech, Lee or Singh Ray that are great for landscape with clear horizons...
580 with UK invoice if you know where to look, went up 20 notes this month grrr! I sold lots of other gear for this one, where that money came from, probably my student loan haha
No more pricey gear for me for a long while
In that case yes sounds like the ISO needs to go up, the aperture to f4~f5.6 and the shutter speed down but probably end up with blurry pictures indoors & hand held.
Shouting out what brand you own ftw.
All I can say is try and handle both. Buying new the Nikon system is the cheapest to begin with.
I'd go for a 400D from the Canon eBay refurb store.
400D + a 50mm f/1.8 that can Auto Focus ftw.

Very white and he has let in to much light, very dark and not enough, I'm assuming that the camera's meter does not work with this lens?

Have a read on ISO, aperture and shutter speed and how they affect each other and exposure...
Yeah the 1000D is a new camera that takes lots of bits from the 350D, was happy with mine (350) but the AF wasn't the best and had a rather small screen, I'd say the 400D is well worth a little more.
I've not handled either the Nikons but on paper the 400D seems much better, 9 point AF vs 3...
Forget the 350D & 1000D, I'd rather get a 400D from the Canon refurb store.

Saying that, http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ says that the 400D is just inside budget.
A little extra power and probably a faster recycle time but I've never needed it. My 430EX keeps up with my 40D. I'd only get the 580EX if I wanted to run my 430EX as a wireless slave.
Built like a McDonalds happy toy, focus was piss poor on my 350D and found it to long indoors but it taught me a lot and sold it on, much preferred my 28 f/1.8 and 85 f/1.8 which is fantastic but much more expensive and I just sold them on so not sure what that tells you.
For the money go for...
Wow, some good stuff on Canon_Uk1 a the moment, shame no lenses but there are some 'bargains' to be had. This 1Ds MKIII just went for 1.5K below UK retail...

sweet, all the same stuff I've read, will be the first lens I'll be using a UV on to stop that dust.
Hopefully the IS will make up a little for my loss in speed!
Stay away from the GE and also the Nikon, I'm sure they make good DSLR's but not heard anything good about their compacts. The Canon A590is sounds like a steal..
