SS Exhaust blowing at the usual place

Yes you can, I use it and it works a treat - it doesn't melt. The packet is all messy, but I think it's called flange sealant (it is orange and sets like rubber). Perfect for sealing up exhausts!

SS Exhaust blowing at the usual place

I hate to say this, but go to Halfords they sell it. It's made by Loctite and can withstand temps to 350 degrees. Worked a treat on mine.

    172 Cup Rear Damper Question

Probably better to change all four I guess and not mix it up. Do the cup's struts and rear shocks fit the phase 1 172, too?

    Pikey manifold Fitted (pictures)

Thanks FeelX, look forward to hearing about that - some RR data would be especially good (before and after). Cheers.

    Pikey manifold Fitted (pictures)

Good work buddy. I saw mine being fitted and it wasn't a straightforward job. I'm also considering a Fastchip, just considering it though as I'm still to be convinced. Rob669

    I make it 'mirror glass'.

    Creaking front suspension

    Which bushes, ARB or wishbones?

'Loosening up' vs 'over the hill'

It's an interesting point. My 172 on 85k feels fine engine wise, but suspension needs replacing probably. I wonder why V8s seem to lose power with age whereas the sort of engines in RS Clios do not?

    GearBox Oil Check

Working underneath the car on level ground, remove the plastic guard tray and there's a white plastic filling plug (looks like a wingnut) on the front side of gearbox (sort of in front and above of the gear lever connection). Unscrew it and then just dip your little finger in. If your can't feel...

what sort of mileage can the 172 take?

I think low miles is only an issue for those into buying and selling cars and having the latest model. I'm just planning on keeping mine as it's a crackin' little car that suits me fine.

    Ph1 172 Sowton, Exeter today

Something interesting going on at Sowton IE? Not me this time, I was driving back to Plymouth with the kids down the A38.

    ph-reebone in Starcross...

Anyway, I'm far to busy racing Audi quattros (story just posted up in road driving thread). The 172's ain't that bad afterall (but I still miss the pace of a bike!).

    Creaking front suspension

I get a creaking noise when I turn the steering wheel, but I'm 95% confident it's the suspension top mounting bearing (the replacement part is £25 and I'll fit it when I've time). If you can do it yourself, try stripping it down - it isn't too difficult and you might see what's causing it.

Creaking when steering - ball joint?

Mine creaks too on one side when I turn slowly. I'm sure it's the suspension mount bearing at the top because it was a bit flakey the last time I took it apart (but I was too lazy to replace it). I'll know next week when I take it off again and fit a new mounting. The cost is £25, I've sourced a...

Exhaust Gasket from cat back - options

Sounds good. What are we talking about though, is it silicon sealant like the clear stuff that squirts out of a tube usually used for sealing windows? Thanks. Rob

My 172 Cup has been STOLEN.

Sorry to hear that, Mark. I hope you get it back soon and it's ok. Rob669

Exhaust Gasket from cat back - options

I've re-fitted my exhaust but it's blowing at the joint between the cat and the stainless steel cat-back section. I have replace the Renault metal gasket with a new OEM one, but it still blows and I've even tried plugging the gap with several gaskets! Anyone know if it's possible to buy a...

    Revs Fluctuating on there own

Tony, the thing I found was that I had to fiddle about with it a bit so it felt really smooth when connected up again. Mine feels fine now, but it did take some messing about with before the pedal action felt really smooth. I compared mine with another 172 ph 1 before I replace the cable and...

    throttle sticking open

I'm not convinced that there is a common ph1 172 problem of the Throttle Body spring becoming baggy. I nearly bought a new TB because my revs wouldn't drop down, but then I just changed the cable (it had been changed 3 months before and was fine until I messed about with it) and I carefully...

    Revs Fluctuating on there own

This has been covered sooooooooooooooo many times before. Do a search and you'll see that all you need to do is replace the throttle cable at a grand cost of £18 approx. I believe that 9 times out of 10 this will sort out the problem. I've put a guide showing how to do it in the guides section...

shocker top, replace in pair or is single ok?

The spring is easy to check to see if it's seated properly, you just need a torch then you'll see where it is supposed to be.

    Wheel Bolt torque

    Dunno, but on a 172 ph1 it's 80 lb/ft - it might help.

shocker top, replace in pair or is single ok?

I had just the driver's side one replaced, no probs.

what power will a stock clutch take?

Not certain, but isn't the gearbox the weak point? Rob669
  28. Rob669

    throttle sticking open

Look in the guides section M8. I posted a guide to changing the throttle cable recently. It will be the cable that's the cause. Rob669

    old air intake

No. Just take off the wheel arch liner to get to it. It's one bolt, 13mm - the horns are connected to it.
