Hi, welcome. Enjoy your cup. My two cents of advice:
- dont thrash it, run it in for the first 1k miles gradually build to 3.5/4k revs use the gearbox etc. Its difficult but it will pay dividends
- dont go for crappy useless vulgar mods. Keep the car looking standard if you can. Any...
Ben you should have seen the state of the piston rings on all 4 pistons. All 3 rings were completely mashed. They were sent back to Renault for investigation. We were very lucky to catch the problem early and the bores were perfect. Apparently its a common problem and most cup cars need to have...
RB, if Millway setup the car for maximum power without properly checking for detonation (as happened with mine) your car will be detting every time you are at full throttle. In time that will damage the piston rings and cause you £££. It happened to me. My car has now been fully fixed and...
A cup/lightened 172 with 200 bhp or more would already leave a Mk2 V6 in the dark on power to weight. A 225bhp with the weight of a cup would slaughter it. Anybody going to the Renaulsport track days will regularly see slightly modified cups lap faster than V6s.
Now, having said that, I love...
cant recommend anybody as such, I can only recommend avoiding the two Ive used: Millway and Owen developments.
The one my mechanic is now using is based in Essex, I can get you details if you are interested.
What I can recommend though is that you call a few Unichip dealers in your area and...
still have the unichip. Nothing wrong with it. But now I have it mapped regularly by people who have a clue what they are doing (re ben/andy posts).
If the site had a section on what not to do, or problem diagnostic and solutions, that would be a definite candidate given the number of people...
Youre both absolutely right. the job was botched. I have no problem in naming and shaming the dastek operators Ive used, as they have caused me significant financial loss: Owen Developments in Oxfordshire and Millway in Hampshire
Whats the best map process to be 100% sure that det will be avoided?
the cams were the first regrind of an F4R by piper. Discussed them with their head techy Warren.
The original (badly done as it later transpired) unichip was fitted with a catback exhaust and a BMC filter only . The other mods came later. The standard car was pushing 166bhp, with the unichip...
If you read my post, youll understand that the problem doesnt come from the Unichip as such. It comes from the fact that the F4R engine has the unusual tendency to reach peak power AFTER it has already been pushed into detonation (i.e youre damaging your pistons/rings/cylinders). So ANY chip...
youre absolutely right.
Im waiting to see what can be done with the Mk2 V6. If somehow that could be increased to 220bhp/ton I may get one and tweek it. But unless the Mk2 can shed some weight, youd need 290/300 bhp to achieve that power/weight.
I really think the "sweet spot" for Renault...
"Ideal for some drag racing maniac that wants to kill themselves and other road users"
thatll be moi - flattery will get you nowhere!
No, seriously I was replying with track use in mind. the cup chassis, brakes and mechanics are good for 240bhp with the main issue becoming traction, hence my...
if youre consuming oil, I suggest a simple check. Disconnect the black elbow that connects the airbox to the throttle body and check if theres any oil in there. You can also check by disconnecting the breather pipe that leads into that elbow and check for oil, but thats more difficult. If you...
no I got the cams developed by Piper and installed by the same people who did the head. Not Colin, who was involved with the suspension and most importantly with diagnosing and solving the blow-by problem caused by detting etc as you know. However, Colin is more than capable to supervise your...
there must be a garage/tyre fitter thatll let me put the car on their ramp and do my stuff for 15 mins for a fiver!!
otherwise will have a look in the for sale section for a couple of ramps, but thats a waste of money as its a one off
Thanks Nicky, I thought about that. The curb would have to be pretty high, and easily accessible (cars lowered). Im racking my brains to remember in what supermarket Ive been where the parking area was elevated by about a meter above the pavement behind, and you could just let the front hang...
I need to get good access under the front bumper to secure the spoiler lip which was dislodged while parking the car. I would also like to reposition the intake hose to my BMC and do some work on my fogs
Soo, is anybody aware of a ramp I could have access to - free/cheap - or maybe an elevated...
a mild cam profile on inlet/exhaust will give an additional 8bhp or so. By mild I mean that max lift at TDC should not be more than 1-1.5mm in order to keep the hydraulic lifters and current springs etc. The duration/overlap can be increased in order to improve the engines breathing, again...
The two cams (inlet/outlet) would now cost about £130 to regrind at Piper. They used my cams as the templates. It would obviously cost you manual labour to have somebody take off the cams, put them back and adjust the timing. I would say £300-350 in total.
ps. so I would recommend you go for a Renault-installed system. Contact renaultsport in Wimbledon, get the R-sport ECU, the R-sport exhaust cam and thatll be plenty. Dont bother with other stuff unless you need to.
Tony: Fred2001 above said it couldnt be done without TBs
I run a K-tec cat back with the mid silencer section, as the car needs to stay below 95-98 dBA for circuit use. Removing the silencer and replacing the cat will marginally improve performance
