Having used a vista system in work for a week or so I would say I would rank it along side a human poo... with fly's hovering around... covered in larva... with a tad of blood dripping down..
Im not making this up but I had exactly the same problem on an XP system.. I thought it was the graphics card going faulty.. I installed linux on it and I have never had the issue since.
Im not saying install linux.. just saying its not always a hardware thing.. Does it only do it when booted...

Nah, linux installs onto the PS3 hard drive as an 'other os' which you can then boot into, you could set up remote shares eg have a 10TB file server and map those drives into the PS3 which will use them kinda like a windows mapped drive.
Full blown media centre.. !

Tell him if you put ubuntu on he neednt worry about viruses again.. and that he doesnt need to bother with cd keys and licenses etc. That he wont have to pay for upgrades etc !
The system I did above was because the person was sick of windows lol was causing all kinds of problems !!
most people wont switch until they reach breaking point with windows... thats what did it for me waaaaaay back.. told the system to shut down.. waited.. tried again.. waited...
My linux media box will stream up to 3 seperate live freeview channels at the same time.. its quite cool ! but it will cost you one jillion dollars a day for access ;) :P

Still loving Ubuntu, just installed it on another system with a wireless card knowing the pain wireless can be in linux. After installation sure enough the wireless wasnt working..
Thanks to Ubuntu and its community support software I was up and running with...

They arent stupid.. but neither is M$ when it comes to loosing money...
You may still get banned, its just the chance you take.. At the end of the day M$ own your console and can force updates on you.. so its a game of cat and mouse..

How is ubuntu not real linux lol..
I use it on desktop systems as its easy to setup, run and manage.. its easy to install new applications and the user support is massive.
Im considering moving 3 FC5/6 systems in my work to Ubuntu for that very reason. Its a pain in the ass upgrading RHEL...
I reckon I could get on with pretty much any distro.. it just takes a bit to get used to different package managers, file locations etc... to be honest I kinda prefer building things from source anyway as you can optimize it all.
