Im going to put this one to bed, in my own mind at least, when I get my car back on the road. Im going to go for a run with an IK on, then change to the airbox and see what I think.
Mat Brown did 1/4 mile runs with an IK and with the airbox - I think he said that the IK gave a fractionally...
I saw a black 172 Mk2 the other day parked near to my house. Ive never really been struck by their beauty before, but in the black (the best colour, of course) it looked fab. So I know what you mean! My 16v in black, with the leather, has the same effect!
The only test Ive seen of a 16v was in Autocar in 1991.
0-60 7.3 secs, 30-70 7.1 secs, 127mph top speed.
Those figures arent that much less! Aaron Cs totally standard 16v pulls 0-60 in 7.1 secs.
A standard 16v should make about 115bhp at the wheels with very little torque until 4500rpm. But be warned, there are some very powerful standard F7P/R-series engines out there. Many F7R (Willy) engines make 140-150bhp at the wheels; the quoted power at the fly is 150bhp!
I would hope my...
Well, see my other post as Im being a bit tight lipped about engine mods and I dont want to give you a false impression of the performance until Ive got it back on the road and then on the rollers. Im pretty confident that you wont be on my bumper at 60 though - but fair play if you are...
Cant I just keep that under my hat? Ive gone to great lengths to keep it all quiet, e.g. by puting on the original wheels and finding an original air box.
Its not been driven since late November, when the engine blew out a spark plug. Ive still not got the wheels on it yet and the brakes...
The front bumper, bonnet (not in shape, but its alloy rather than steel I think), front arches and rear bumper are different. It also has side skirts.
So its not as major a job as a 16v (with its flared rear arch panels).
Still no wheels yet, will have to meet up when I get them back!
No doubt at some point someone will point to the Golf racing TDi.
Just want to point out that this is more a case of:
"Hello this is VW marketing here - get us a TD racecar"...
than...
"OOhhh - diesels are the best for racing"
You know the old adage: race on Sunday, sell on Monday...
Theres a Mk1 and Mk2 Clio (sometimes called Clio 1 and Clio 2). Mk1 was 1991-1998 and Mk2 is 1998-present.
There were 3 "phases" of the Mk1 Clio and so far there have been two phases of the Mk2 Clio.
The Clio Mk1 phase 1 and 2 (1991-94 and 94-96) were similar, with only minor changes -...
Mine has a PBV (as a compliment to other mods) and seems to run OK. It did throw a spark plug out a couple of months ago, but I dont think that was connected.
The only thing that worries me is that since its adjustable by a nut on the top of it, I was wondering what would happen if it came...

I like the look of this car.
I was saying in some other thread how different the driving style is.
TD: foot down, thrust, thrust wanes, change gear...back on the power
Clio 16v: foot down...erm...ok, shes picking up, hmmm this is...
Neil - this is why were coming down! Im not going to be there to race anything else except this mega-HDi of yours: :D

wake up.
Hate to rub anyones noses in it, but Im paying just under £700 fully comp on my 16v with only 1 years NCB (previously on my dads policy). Im 22, but I live in rural Wales, so theres not much chance of theft!

Im stunned to say the least with that time! I know torque talks, so to speak - but many other more mainstream turbos with comparable toruqe and higher power figures dont post times that good.
I know its as good as hearsay unless we see the timing slips, but Im sure that a 1/4 mile time like...
Whenever I come back to these posts Im tempted to write a "killer post", in which the laws of science, quantitative analysis and qualitative assessment will blow away the case for a HDi in all but the very highest state of tune beating a standard 16v. But sometimes weve just got to take a step...
My dad has one as a company car. Very nice. If they were the same price, Id go for another VAG Group car as the interior is still a bit poverty-spec - but its about £8k less than the equivalent Audi!
I dont like to post about cars Ive beaten these days as you get a lot of "I dont believe you". Most of the time I race cars from standstill at the Severn Bridge tolls - nearest thing there is to 1/4 miling on the open road (ten lanes go into three on the flat over about a 1/3 mile):
Audi TT...
I had a "runbling" noise for a while that got worse under load of passengers or when on a hill. It really annoyed me and I was worried about all sorts of things. In the end, it was simply a shagged manifold-to-downpipe gasket and it cost me pennies to fix.
